Jordan Estate has been making world class reds in Stellenbosch for nearly twenty years and this blend honours the Jordan family heritage as master cobblers. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (43%), and topped up with Merlot (38%) and a little Cabernet Franc (12%), then finally a dash of Petit Verdot (7%), the wine is aged in oak for twenty-four months. It has hints of dark chocolate, black fruits, mint and toasty vanilla. This is a big mouth-filling wine with densely layered ripe tannins, beautifully balanced and refined, giving the ultimate expression of the Jordan terroir.

Buy this if...you love rich, earthy reds.

The Producer

Owned and managed by Gary and Cathy Jordan since 1993, this Stellenbosch farm has a history dating back over 300 years. Gary's a geologist, Cathy an economist by trade but together this husband and wife team is a phenomenon. Gary's parents, Ted and Shelagh, bought the 146 hectare farm in 1982 and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specialising in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. Gary and Cathy worked internationally for two years, refining their high energy instincts with practical experience. They returned home in 1992 to build a new cellar and begin the wine-making odyssey that has cemented their position as one of the key players in the South African wine industry.

The Winemaker

Sjaak Nelson has been part of the furniture (in the nicest possible way) at Jordan estate for over 15 years. Growing up amongst the vineyards of Tulbagh, he started out studying Business Management but chanced upon a week's winery work at Tulbagh co-operative as a recent graduate and three years later he was still there. A move to Stellenbosch winery Saxenberg followed and he soon moved on to neighbours Jordan Estate where he has been making award-winning wines ever since.

The Region

Stellenbosch is synonymous with the production of quality wine and is one of the most exciting and idyllic regions in which to grow grapes. It's rivals any premium wine region.
The Jordan Estate is renowned for their spectacular hillside vineyards of Table Mountain, False Bay and Stellenbosch. The complex patchwork of soils, aspects, altitudes and micro-climates helps contribute to the incredible success of this estate. The vineyards on these slopes face north, south, east and west, with vineyards lying at altitudes up to 400m above sea level. Close proximity to both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans allows from coastal fog and cool sea breezes minimise the risk of frost damage.

Bobotie

A traditional South African dish of spiced mince and a creamy egg-based topping matches well with rich, spiced reds such as Syrah, Tannat or some New World Bordeaux blends. We'd recommend the Cobbler's Gill from Jordan Estate.

Blue Cheese Burgers with Sweet Potato Wedges

Burgers and red wine are a match made in heaven but don’t forget the blue cheese element which could scupper your wine choice. To contrast the creamy, salty notes of the cheese, head to full, fruity reds with good acidity. South African reds are a good bet - Jordan Estate makes particularly good wines.

Aubergine & Mushroom Bourguignon

A vegan version on the classic Beef Bourguignon. Just as rich, just as rustic and in no way inferior. A glorious warming dish that invites earthy reds with a hint of age. Try the Jordan Estate Cobblers Hill.
