No other red wine screams 'South Africa' like Pinotage. They invented the grape variety, back in 1925, crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsaut. A good example, like this brilliant value wine, often has an unmistakable whiff of banana to it, coupled with ripe cherry and plum.

It's a co-operative effort, with fruit brought in from 35 growers in the Robertson Valley. It's the ripeness of the Pinotage grapes that's critical to get right, and they're able to fine-tune this by restricting the amount of water the vine receives as the berries are ripening.

The list of foods that this red wine works well with is long, but try everything from roast beef, guinea fowl, to lamb casserole, pizza, or just enjoy a glass on its own.

Made from Pinotage, South Africa's flagship red grape, this is a dark, brooding wine, rich with black fruit and just a hint of chocolate. Always worth trying, we think you'll lap up this great value example.

The Producer

The word Klippen is a geographical term for an outcrop of rock, whilst Kop in Africaans is either a hillock or head. The fruit for Klippenkop Pinotage is sourced from 35 special grape growing families in the Robertson Valley.

The Winemaker

Grapes were harvested at full ripeness from a variety of vineyard sites and fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the classic Pinotage flavours.

The Region

The Pinotage vineyards are grown in the lime rich Karoo soils with fairly high clay content. This soil enables growers to use regulated deficit irrigation to control vine vigour and berry size. Pinotage quality benefits a lot if quite severe water deficits are induced between berry set and veraison.
