Syrah, the heavyweight grape of the Rhone, comes into its own when grown on the lime-rich soils of the Robertson region. The grapes used for this wine were specially selected from 35 grape growing families who plant their vines in the Karoo and Shale rich soils of the region yet keep bunch size below 120 g per bunch to ensure concentration of fruit. This bramble-rich wine is perfect with red meats, lamb, game, pasta and pulses.

Flavours of spice, mulberry and vanilla mingle to make a true South African star.

The Producer

Klippenkop takes its name from the Afrikaans words for rocky outcrop or hillock. Indeed this is a good description of some of the terrain in the Robertson region where the 35 family-run vineyards that produce this wine are found. The Klippenkop company was first established in 1941 and the vineyards of its growers now cover an area of 1900 hectares. The wide variety of terrain allows for perfect siting of each grape variety to get the very best from each cultivar. The vines for this wine are aged between 7 and 9 years old resulting in high quality fruit.

The Winemaker

Harvested when fully ripe the grapes were gently pressed and the juice was fermented in stainless steel temperature controlled tanks to retain the full fruit component and to add body and weight to the final wine.

The Region

Robertson in the Western Cape region of South Africa is popularly known as the Valley of Wine and Roses.
