If you're a fan of Australian red wines, you'll come across the Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It's one of Australia's greatest gifts to the world of wine, marrying the two grape varieties together to create a uniquely Aussie red wine.

You'll find ripe plum and mocha flavours coming from the Shiraz, seamlessly combining with the blackcurrant and mint notes of Cabernet Sauvignon. In this wine, you'll also have a wine that screams quality above all else. It's had more care and attention lavished upon it than most wines at this price point. And that is immediately evident when you take a sip.

Top-notch Australian red wine that's great value too.

There's something really special about the Australian Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It's the 'great Australian red', and a style of wine you should really try if you want to taste some of Australia's best red wines

The Producer

Born in the Barossa Valley in 1930, Peter Lehmann began a lifetime of winemaking at the age of just 17 when he joined the Yalumba team. He decided to establish his own winery in 1979, as a way of helping the local growers to sell their grapes, a helping hand which went on to become one of Australia's greatest wine brands. The winery now sources fruit from 140 local growers, who are integral to the success of the company. Peter's role in saving the Barossa was rewarded with the award of ‘Personality of the Year’ by the International Wine Challenge in 2009, not to mention a member of the Order of Australia.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"Bold crimson/purple in colour and bold in aroma too, this is a wine driven by fruit in the blue/black spectrum; think blueberries and damson, blackberries and sloes. There’s a real crunch to the fruit on the palate too, a bit of spice and chariness but not at all overdone, and finishing with bright cherry and juicy blueberry fruit."

The Region

The Barossa Valley is situated an hour's drive north of Adelaide and is arguably the country's best known wine region, with over 150 wineries in production. With its Mediterranean climate and rich, dark soils, this is ideal red wine country with many different sub-regions giving a wide variety of styles. Rhone grapes Shiraz (Syrah) and Grenache are particularly suited to the region, producing rich, structured reds with great ageing potential, but its rich ripe white wines are a thing of beauty.

Blue Cheese Burgers with Sweet Potato Wedges

Burgers and red wine are a match made in heaven but don’t forget the blue cheese element which could scupper your wine choice. To contrast the creamy, salty notes of the cheese, head to full, fruity reds with good acidity. A classic Aussie Shiraz-Cabernet blend is just what the Somm ordered.
