A fantastically concentrated sweet wine from Southern France. The locals drink Pacherenc with savoury food, much as we might enjoy Port - with cheese, deli meats, and the local speciality pâté de foie gras. Sweet but with a refreshing acidity to match, this wine has a remarkable preserved pineapple flavour.

Buy this if...you love sweet styles and a bargain.

A luscious, fresh sweetie from South-west France. We love it!

The Producer

Winemaker Andre Dubosc set about transforming the fortunes of the local wine industry in Saint Mont with a group of young wine growers, helping to create the Cotes de Gascogne appellation and at the same time renewing an interest in the sweet wines of Pacherenc. In 1979 the three local co-operatives joined forces to create Producteurs Plaimont, with a total of 1000 winegrowers spread over 5,300 hectares.

The Winemaker

Winemaker at Plaimont since 2006, Thomas Troulay makes the sweet Pacherenc wines at the Plaimont winery, following stints in the USA, Bordeaux and the Southern Rhone. Grapes are hand-harvested late at the end of October when over-ripe, with a strict selection in the vineyard to give just 15hl/ha. They are collected in small baskets to avoid juice flow and vinified at a cool temperature in stainless steel. After vinification, the wine still contains 80g of sugar per litre balanced by crisp acidity.

The Region

The Pacherenc du Vic Bilh appellation covers the same area as the dry red Madiran in the centre of Gascony south-west France. The tradition of producing a sweet white wine from the local grapes was started in the 17th century when farmers realised that they could benefit from the warm sunny autumn days to concentrate the sugar levels in the grapes.
