Subtle yet stunning Spanish white wine, Oleo Verdejo comes in at a remarkably good price, thanks to its relative obscurity. Don't let the fact you've never heard of it put you off - Rude's purpose is to unearth hidden gems.

Lime, lemon, grapefruit - that's the flavours spectrum that'll be dancing across your tongue, well-chilled of course. Hints of grass and fennel (tastier than that reads, honestly), and you've got the perfect aperitif, fish-partner, or if you're a fan of Mexican-style food, then get ready to put the beers to one side for a change.

The Spanish white wine to challenge Kiwi Sauvignon? Maybe, maybe not, but it deserves a go in your fridge nonetheless.

Originally from northern Africa apparently, Verdejo (vurr-day-ho) now finds a home in Spain, where it makes some of its best zesty, citrusy white wines. Like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc but fancy a change? Verdejo's made just for you

The Producer

Faustino Rivero Ullecia has been part of the historic Marqués del Atrio's since 1997. The Rivero family have been linked to growing, making and ageing wines for five generations and have developed into one of the leading bodegas both nationally and internationally.

The Winemaker

Faustino Rivero Ullecia have a philosophy of ongoing innovation based on the integration of tradition Spanish winemaking and new winemaking techniques. The climate of the region, combined with its altitude means that the wines mature much more quickly than in the cooler, northern DOs. A Tempranillo from Utiel-Requena can be fully mature after six months in oak and a year in the bottle – less than half the time required in the DoCa Rioja, which the winemakers take into consideration when producing their blends.

The Region

The dry and windy climate of La Mancha makes it easier to practice organic and biodynamic viticulture because fungal diseases are unable to thrive in in these conditions. Harvest is in August and the grapes are often picked at night to ensure fresh flavours and fruit character.

Noodles with Mussels & Crayfish

Quick to prepare and very delicious, this Spanish noodle dish showcases the fresh seafood perfectly - try pairing a Verdejo. It's a bright white with crisp acidity to add a twist of freshness without overshadowing the delicate shellfish flavours

Spicy Fish Braai

Super-simple but very effective, the spicy marinade on barbecued fish combines sweetness, heat and plenty of flavour. Try a white with bright fruit flavours and good acidity such as Spanish Verdejo.
