Old vine Tempranillo produces here a wine of amazing concentration and power, considering the relatively light price tag for the region. There's eight months oak ageing in 30% French and 70% American oak - lending a nice vanilla cream touch to the wine. There's a very full, warming nose with brambly berry fruit, while the palate leads you to darker places, with flavours of liquorice and cocoa powder alongside savoury spiced tones. Dee-lish.

A great match for red meats and stews. It'll also handle some spice.

Sleek and sumptuous as a black cherry in robes of royalty. Gorgeous.Olly Smith, The Three Wine Men

The Producer

Bodegas LAN’s motivation to expand into other regions in Spain led to the Marqués de Burgos project in Ribera de Duero. After a very thorough search within the appellation, the village of Quintana del Pidio was selected as the source of the grapes, as it enjoys a very high proportion of very old and gnarled vines. These ancient vines produce very low yields (around three tonnes per hectare), giving rise to wines with concentration, intense colour and smooth tannins.

The Winemaker

Winemaker Maria Barua ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25° C in order to obtain maximum concentration of the
primary aromas. The wine is aged for a total of six months in new American oak barrels 70%) and in French oak (30%). This was followed by ten months of ageing in the bottle prior to release.

The Region

Situated in northern Spain, to the west of Rioja, the Ribera del Duero is a predominantly red wine producing region with the river Duero (or Douro as it becomes in Portugal). The vineyards here are a mixture of soils: sandy, gravel, shingle and quartz, with each soil type contributing to different flavours in the fruit.

Feijoada

A robust, flavoursome Portuguese pork stew that's not for the faint-hearted, this needs a full, ripe red wine to stand up to the porky flavours. This red from Ribera del Duero has the refreshing acidity and bright fruit flavours to stand up to the Feijoada.

Barbequed Garlic and Herb Mushrooms

When you think barbecue, it doesn't have to be just meat. This simple and tasty vegan recipe takes delicious large mushrooms (Portobello would be ideal), add some tasty herbs, and that smoky taste that everyone loves. Because mushrooms have a strong savoury taste, they work well with a wide range of red wines, try the Marques de Burgos Roble.
