Spanish red wines are amongst the best value bottles from anywhere. But, when you're looking for a standout Spanish wine, look for local grape varieties to maximise the quality/value ratio. Here it's 50% Tempranillo, and 50% Bobal that take centre stage.

The Reserva tag comes thanks to the 24 months the finished wine spent in American oak barrels and bottle before being released. It's one of the great quirks of Spanish red wines that they do all the hard work beforehand, so it's at its peak when you pop the cork.

The dark cherry-red colour, hints of spice on the nose (emphasised by that ageing), and a richly rewarding bunch of flavour explosions on the palate all combine to make this a brilliant value Spanish red wine. Frankly, it's unbeatable value.

Not as fashionable as Rioja, but every bit as memorable, wines like this from Utiel-Requena are secret Spanish red wine gems that deserve your attention. Quality and value wrapped up in one budget-beating bottle, complete with that weird netting the Spanish like to put around their bottles

The Producer

Faustino Rivero Ullecia has been part of the historic Marqués del Atrio's since 1997. The Rivero family have been linked to growing, making and ageing wines for five generations and have developed into one of the leading bodegas both nationally and internationally.

The Winemaker

Faustino Rivero Ullecia have a philosophy of ongoing innovation based on the integration of tradition Spanish winemaking and new winemaking techniques. The climate of the region, combined with its altitude means that the wines mature much more quickly than in the cooler, northern DOs. A Tempranillo from Utiel-Requena can be fully mature after six months in oak and a year in the bottle – less than half the time required in the DoCa Rioja, which the winemakers take into consideration when producing their blends.

The Region

To the west of the Province of Valencia lies the region of Utiel-Requena that takes its name from the two towns – Utiel and Requena. Utiel-Requena produces robust and powerful reds, predominantly using the Bobal grape.

Venison Stew with Sage-infused Carrots

Rich, earthy flavours call for rich, earthy wines. Thankfully most countries offer a red that fits this category, and an aged Rioja fits the bills perfectly with its notes of sweet and savoury spice with dark, dried fruit flavours. We really like a Reserva Spanish red wine with this dish.
