Chile produces juicy, soft Cabernets with plenty of fruit intensity. Made by Vinas Alto Roble, based in the Curicó Valley (part of the Central Valley region) the Rio Mataquito is richly aromatic, with fresh red berries on the nose and palate, with a smooth, supple structure.

Buy this if...you like your reds ripe and juicy.

The Producer

Vinas Alto Roble (meaning tall oak) call the beautiful town of Yerbas Buenas in the Maule Valley home, although vineyard sites are scattered the length and breadth of the Central Valley area in the Colchagua, Curico and Maule production areas. Timing proved right for founders Francisco Achurra and Patricio Larrain who bought a small Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in the area in 1993. Growing recognition for Chilean wines led them to invest in neighbouring vineyards, with a gradual move towards the cooler, higher altitude sites.

The Winemaker

Winemaker Eloisa Uribe qualified from Chile’s Universidad Catolica specializing in oenology. After the ubiquitous winemaking experience gained in both Sonoma and Bordeaux, Eloisa returned to work with Alto Roble in 2002. She now oversees the winemaking team and all aspects of the process, including the creation of market specific wines such as our Rio Mataquito duo.

The Region

The Rio Mataquito wines hail from the Curico Valley, situated towards the south of the Central Valley region where myriad grape varieties enjoy this sheltered, sunny climate with hot summers and cold winters. Altitude plays an important part in the freshness of the wines and and sea breezes and low night temperatures allow flavours in the grapes to develop.

Good all-rounder

Lovely wine which isn't too fruity or dry. Goes with anything or on its own!
I loved it!

Slow cooker Beef Brisket

A super-simple one pot recipe using a flavoursome cut of brisket. Try with a fruity, medium-bodied red to contrast nicely with the meaty, savoury sauce. The Chilean Rio Mataquito Cabernet Sauvignon will work a treat.

Frikkadels: South African Meatballs

These South African spiced meatballs are an easy pairing for red wines - the beef and pork combination will suit most medium-bodied reds but head for a combination of soft fruit and structure. Chilean reds, such a Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec will have a great balance of fruit and structure to compliment the dish.
