What's the best Chilean Merlot wine? This wine is a candidate, and once again, shows Chile's strength in turning out top reds for amazingly reasonable prices. Colchagua Valley provides the grapes, whilst the Montes winery converts into a winning South American classic red wine. Few come close for the price

Widely recognised as one of Chile's top wineries, the Montes vineyards are located in the Colchagua Valley in Central Chile. It's bright and complex, with blackcurrant and black cherry flavours and a rich, juicy finish. Aged in oak for six months in French oak before release.

Serious red wine for the money.

Those who find Merlot a little underwhelming will surely think again after sampling this Colchagua Valley example. Rich black fruits... hugely enjoyable drop. Neil Cammies - Western Mail

The Producer

A dream became a reality in 1987 when Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, both highly experienced wine professionals, sowed the seeds for what was to become Montes. In 1988, they joined up with the other two founders, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, who brought their own complementary skills and expertise to the venture. They've succeeded in taking Montes wines from nowhere to more than 100 countries worldwide; by making ‘first growth’ wines respected and admired by the world’s critics and trade, and by drawing attention to what Chile was capable of producing.

The Winemaker

The Montes philosophy is one of minimal intervention in the winery, left to rest and mature with little handling. The Apalta winery was opened in December 2004, with the capacity to hold 2,300,000 litres of wine. Its construction heralded a big step forward in the production of the most acclaimed Montes red wines: Montes Alpha, Montes Alpha M, Montes Folly and Purple Angel. The technology and equipment in the winery is state-of-the-art, helping to produce some of the best wines in Chile.

The Region

Montes own vineyards in three distinct locations in Central Chile, with the Classic wines and Montes Folly both produced at the Apalta winery in the heart of the Colchagua Valley, an area now famed for premium red wine production. The south-facing vineyards sits within a natural bowl shapes in the hills, with some high altitude sites enjoying much lower temperatures than on the valley floor. The influence of coastal breezes moderates the overall temperatures and gives the grapes a very long, slow ripening season.

Blue Cheese Burgers with Sweet Potato Wedges

Burgers are red wine are a match made in heaven but don’t forget the blue cheese element which could scuper your wine choice. To contrast the creamy, salty notes (not forgetting acidity) of the cheese, head to full, fruity reds with good acidity, like the Montes Classic Merlot from Colchagua.

Blackened Steak with Red Wine Jus

A simple rump steak calls for a medium to full-bodied red to square up to the dense structure of the meat. Head to rich reds with some oak ageing to give a touch of spice. Try a Chilean Merlot as a great option.

Sausages with Mushrooms & Olives

Quick to prepare and packed with flavour, this sausage stew will work well with smooth, medium-bodied earthy reds with red fruit flavours. We'd go for a Montes Merlot.
