It would be unfair to say the Lirac wine region is like a bargain Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but that's what many say. Just over the Rhône from its more famous neighbour, Lirac does make very satisfying red wines, like this rich & velvety blend. Special Sunday wine? A wine that's knockout value? This is it.

This wine is a blend of Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache, aged in large barrels for ten months to ensure a good balance of fruit and oak character. Beautifully elegant and soft, with aromatic red berry fruit and a palate layered with soft blackberry and redcurrant notes. Excellent value Rhône and a perfect match with grilled red meat and stews.

Buy this if...you're a fan of all things Rhône.

You smell the fruit, full of flavour, reminds me of a good Gigondas. Ian

The Producer

Situated on one of the best vineyard sites in Lirac, the Plateau des Chênes has been farmed by the Bréchet family since 2010. Syrah accounts for around 50% of the total plantings, with Grenache and Cinsault making up the blends.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"In its heavy, embossed bottle this mini-Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from a fifth generation of winegrowers in the southern Rhône. Just a beautiful nose, where the lift of Parma violet and kirsch melts into plush red berries, a dusting of tobacco spice in the background. In the mouth it is a very elegant rendition, nothing too dominant as the lovely dried herb and cherry freshness balances the deeper, more luxurious fruit character, and the smooth tannin and acid balance. Gorgeous."

The Region

This relatively unknown appellation is one to remember - the red clay and quartz pebble soils are almost identical to its neighbour Châteauneuf-du-Pape, separated only by the river Rhône.

A very good Rhone wine

I enjoyed this wine - I like the Rhone Valley wines and this was a very good one.

Lomo Saltado

Steak and chips in its Peruvian guise, this is accompanied by a piquant sweet-sour sauce with tomato and chilli. The combination of meaty juices, fresh tomato and chilli needs a fruit-driven, medium bodied red with good structure to soften the meat.

Beef Goulash with Wide Egg Noodles

A rustic, hearty goulash will pair well with red Rhône blends with good weight of fruit and a smooth structure.

Charcuterie

Cured meats match perfectly with fruity reds with a hint of sweetness, with the fresh, juicy fruit in the wine contrasting with the smoked/salty flavours in the meats.
