More refreshing than running through the garden sprinkler, this Muscadet is the match for seafood. Made from Melon de Bourgogne grapes which are handpicked in the classic Loire region in France, in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. With aromas of citrus and honey, this is bone dry and minerally on the palate with slight salinity and a light spritz. A famous match for oysters or try with Asian chicken dishes or shellfish.

Buy this if...you like bone dry, crisp whites.

The classic partner to seafood. Crisp, refreshing and elegant.

The Producer

The Muscadet or Melon de Bourgogne grape has been planted since 1635 at Chateau de L'Oiseliniere - the first vineyard to recognise its delights. Originally from Burgundy, the grape was first planted in the Loire in the 17th Century as the result of severe frost and the decimation of most of the red varieties. Now in the hands of the Verdier family the average age of a vine is 60 years making for low yields and therefore fabulously concentrated wines.

The Winemaker

The grapes are hand picked and pressed three times as soon as they reach the Chateau. Only the juice from the first two presses is used as this is the purest. The fermentation process takes place in concrete temperature controlled vats. It is then aged on its lees for the whole winter.

The Region

Muscadet is the Loire's western-most vineyard area, producing white wines from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. The maritime climate gives warm summers and cool winters with higher than average rainfall. The proximity to the Atlanic Ocean results in very light, fresh whites which are often bottled with a light spritz - the perfect match for oysters!

Crab Cakes

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white or rosé which doesn't overpower the meat - try Southern French rosés or crisp Loire whites.

Salad Nicoise

Try a light, fresh white with this classic salad - the tuna works well with crisp, easy-drinking styles such as Sauvignon Blanc or Melon de Bourgogne from Muscadet.

Pea And Goats Cheese Risotto

Risottos pair well with both reds and whites so consider the other ingredients when choosing a wine match - the combination of sweet peas and salty goats cheese call for a vibrant white with crisp acidity to balance the cheese. L’Oiseau d’Or Muscadet Sur Lie is a fine match.
