Outstanding Organic Wines
Outstanding Organic Wines Outstanding Organic Wines

There's much to be said for organic wines. Refusing to use any man-made chemicals or fertilisers, winemakers who follow this route are doing their best to produce wines with minimal intervention. Trouble is, for a long time, as wine critics quickly noticed, the quality of some organic wines left much to be desired.

We thought we'd put together a selection of our best organic wines, just to show you how they can easily compete with the best conventional wines. All wines in this case are certified organic, so you'll notice the official organic badges on every bottle.

The white and reds from Spain's Yecla wine regions are so good they might well become your everyday bottles of choice. Over in Italy's 'heel', the Puglian wine region gives you the mightily impressive Primitivo, big and brooding. Then the Loire demonstrates a lighter style of red, with two superb Cabernet Franc wines. Lastly, the premium McLaren Vale and Clare Valley Australian wines are for when you're planning to pull out all the stops.

A dozen organic wines, all proud to wear their organic certificates. These are wines that don't just stop at being organic. They're wines which have tried to go that bit further and showcase the grape varieties and their region's true potential.

Mount Horrocks Watervale Riesling 2017, Clare Valley

0 review(s)

This is my favourite vintage of Stephanie Toole’s dry Riesling in years! The slender, rapier sharp fruit is epic with pithy, chalky notes and no overt juiciness whatsoever. It is a very grown up and stripped down style and this makes it ravishing. Matthew Jukes’ 100 Best Australian Wines

The Producer

Nestling in the Clare Valley north of Adelaide, lies the idyllic setting of Mount Horrocks, a tiny 10 hectare organic estate with a very big following. Under the watchful eye of owner and winemaker Stephanie Toole, who bought the estate in 1993, Mount Horrocks is pretty much at the forefront of the Aussie cool-climate winemaking revolution, showing the world that the country can produce refined, aromatic styles with the discreet use of oak. Only 6 wines are produced, all from organically certified, estate owned vineyards at a cool altitude of 475 metres.

Pea And Goats Cheese Risotto

Risottos pair well with both reds and whites so consider the other ingredients when choosing a wine match. The combination of sweet peas and salty goats cheese call for a vibrant white with lots of fruit flavour. Try and Aussie Riesling as something a bit different. Full recipe

Paolo Leo Passitivo Organic Primitivo 2015, Puglia

0 review(s)

Organic Italian red wine that's a real surprise. There's so much depth here, thanks to the partially-dried grapes, which happens naturally on the vine. If you love a rich red wine with hard cheeses or red meats, you're in for a very special treat. Superb

The Paolo Leo winery has been in the same family hands for five generations, so has been well-placed to witness the dramatic changes in Puglian wine fortunes over the years.

The focus today is very much on producing Italian wines of real character and value, wines which reflect the rich history of Puglian wine.

The new winery was built in 1989 and boasts state of the art winemaking and ageing facilities. The investment Paolo Leo has made, both in their vineyards and in the winery, is clearly reflected in the outstanding quality of the wines.

Blue Cheese Burgers

Burgers and red wine are a match made in heaven but don’t forget the blue cheese element which could scuper your wine choice. To contrast the creamy, salty notes (not forgetting acidity) of the cheese, head to rich, fruity reds with good acidity. Paolo Leo Passitivo Organic Primitivo was made for this dish. Full recipe
