The Wildcard gets its name from the bet that Peter Lehmann took when setting up his winery. A bet that paid off thankfully, with this enticing Chardonnay. No oak in sight but three months ageing on the lees makes for a richer texture and mouth-feel. The nose is bright and aromatic with hints of fresh peaches, leading to a soft, fruit-driven palate with notes of peach and citrus.

Buy this if...you love Chardonnay without the wood.

Fresh, peachy Chardonnay that's made to make your mouth water.

The Producer

Born in the Barossa Valley in 1930, Peter Lehmann began a lifetime of winemaking at the age of just 17 when he joined the Yalumba team. He decided to establish his own winery in 1979, as a way of helping the local growers to sell their grapes, a helping hand which went on to become one of Australia's greatest wine brands. The winery now sources fruit from 140 local growers, who are integral to the success of the company. Peter's role in saving the Barossa was rewarded with the award of ‘Personality of the Year’ by the International Wine Challenge in 2009, not to mention a member of the Order of Australia.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"Though it falls squarely into the 'easy drinking' category, this is also a fine example of the new approach to Chardonnay adopted by most Australian producers since the 'ABC Club' rejected the big and oaky styles of the 1990s. Unoaked, but given some lees ageing to add a bit of creaminess and texture, it has plenty of ripe pear and orangey fruit, hinting at mango, but the fresh fleet-footed acidity and only 11.5% alcohol by volume gives it vitality too."

The Region

The Barossa Valley is situated an hour's drive north of Adelaide and is arguably the country's best known wine region, with over 150 wineries in production. With its Mediterranean climate and rich, dark soils, this is ideal red wine country with many different sub-regions giving a wide variety of styles. Rhone grapes Shiraz (Syrah) and Grenache are particularly suited to the region, producing rich, structured reds with great ageing potential, but its rich ripe white wines are a thing of beauty.
