Philip Shaw produces this ripe, generous Merlot from high-altitude vineyards in the Orange region of New South Wales. Extended maceration on the grape skins contributed depth of flavour and enhanced the savoury character in the wine, complemented by rich plummy fruit and notes of liquorice, vanilla and cinnamon, thanks to twelve months oak ageing.

Buy this if...you like ripe, savoury reds.

‘For the musically minded, here’s a superb Merlot from the wonderfully named Koomooloo vineyard...A symphony in a bottle.’

The Producer

Searching for the ideal site to plant a vineyard proved to be a 20 year journey for winemaker Philip Shaw but the final choice came by accident as he flew over the rolling hills of Orange in New South Wales in 1988. Further investigation revealed a wonderful balance of sunshine, soil, differing aspects and of course the high altitude at 900m above sea level that contributes to the unique freshness and concentration in the wines. The 47 hectares of vineyard are on the slopes of the now extinct volcano Mt Canobolas, making it one of the highest vineyards in Australia. Philip Shaw was recently named a Five Star winery in the James Halliday Wine Guide 2018.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"Cool-climate Merlot with only 12.5% alcohol, but the fruit is beautifully ripe here, married to 12 months in oak barrels, giving it plenty of oomph. There’s a delicate floral character flitting about on the nose that’s very appealing, the oak is discreet, and the fruit is all cherries and liquorice, a nice firm edge to the palate too, giving this energy and a sense of real freshness, as well as easily approachable fruit and that lick of spicy oak to complete a crowd-pleasing picture."

The Region

Located approximately 260km west of Sydney on the slopes of the Great Dividing Ranges, the Orange vineyards begin at around 600m above sea level, rising to 1,100m. The high altitude of the Koomooloo vineyard offers cool ripening conditions and high levels of ultra-violet light which greatly assist in flavour and colour development of the berries and a long cool ripening season with low rainfall.
