Idiotic by name but not by nature, this lovely, fresh Shiraz from Philip Shaw's high altitude Koomooloo vineyard owes more than a passing nod to Northern Rhône styles, with lifted black berry fruit, a hint of sherbet, pepper and spice and a well balanced, juicy finish.

Buy this if...you say Syrah, we say Shiraz.

The Producer

Searching for the ideal site to plant a vineyard proved to be a 20 year journey for winemaker Philip Shaw but the final choice came by accident as he flew over the rolling hills of Orange in New South Wales in 1988. Further investigation revealed a wonderful balance of sunshine, soil, differing aspects and of course the high altitude at 900m above sea level that contributes to the unique freshness and concentration in the wines. The 47 hectares of vineyard are on the slopes of the now extinct volcano Mt Canobolas, making it one of the highest vineyards in Australia. Philip Shaw was recently named a Five Star winery in the James Halliday Wine Guide 2018.

The Winemaker

Two-time winner of the International Wine Challenge Winemaker of the Year Award, this is Philip Shaw's solo venture after decades of premium winemaking in Australia. Tellingly, he waited nearly 20 years for the vineyard to reach full maturity before attempting to produce wines to sell and believes that the final wine is a marriage between the vineyard and the winemaking - not refining it, but getting it right first time.

The Region

Located approximately 260km west of Sydney on the slopes of the Great Dividing Ranges, the Orange vineyards beging at around 600m above sea level, rising to 1,100m. The high altitude of the Koomooloo vineyard offers cool ripening conditions and high levels of ultra-violet light which greatly assist in flavour and colour development of the berries and a long cool ripening season with low rainfall.

Steak and chips in its Peruvian guise, this is accompanied by a piquant sweet-sour sauce with tomato and chilli. The combination of meaty juices, fresh tomato and chilli needs a fruit-driven, medium-bodied red with good structure to soften the meat. Australian Shiraz is a great option.
