If you're looking for a pure Cabernet Franc red wine, then France's Loire Valley is a good bet. It's the parent (along with Sauvignon Blanc) of Cabernet Sauvignon and is often described in wine circles as the 'feminine' side of that variety.

Whilst there's a good chance you'll have tasted it if you enjoy red Bordeaux, the Loire offers both the chance to really see what it's all about and exceptional value.

There's an inviting leafy, blackcurrant bush character to the aroma, a silky texture and soft tannins. It'll also take well to being lightly chilled, making it an ideal choice for warmer weather and particularly refreshing for a red wine.

The red wines of the Loire Valley offer you some of France's true wine bargains. Whilst winemaking's improved massively in recent decades, prices haven't risen too much. So you'll be getting red wines that won't stretch the wallet and are superb value

The Producer

Claude Michel Pichon is the sixth generation of the family to take the reins at the family estate in the heart of the Nantais vineyards of the Loire Valley. He expanded the domain's vineyards to a total of 92 hectares with the vines an average age of around 30 years old.

Winemaking

The Pichon family adapt the grape variety to the soil to ensure the best quality production. They're always looking for the latest modern wine-making techniques such as the cold maceration and thermovinification to express the natural fruit flavours of the grape.

The Region

The climate in the Nantais region is very different to that of the rest of the Loire Valley. With close proximity to the Atlantic, the climate is temperate and wetter than vineyards further inland, with poor soils ideally suited to make fresh, dry whites and lighter, floral reds.

Baked Stuffed Aubergine With Walnut and Roquefort

With a lot of strong, rich flavours in this baked dish, you need to match the salty cheese with acidic tomato, savoury aubergine and nuts. Try a medium to full-bodied red with enough fruit flavour to contrast with the saltiness in the cheese. Loire Cabernet France will match very well.

Blackened Steak With Red Wine Jus

A simple rump steak calls for a red to square up to the dense structure of the meat. Claude Michel Pichon produces this beautiful Cabernet Franc, with a silky texture and opulent blackcurrant notes that will pair perfectly.
