Notes of cedar mingle with cassis, with hints of aniseed, crushed blackberry leaf, and a rich, earthy sophistication. This is no shy and retiring red wine, with its almost textbook Cabernet Sauvignon character leaving you in no doubt as to its seriousness.

Whilst you'll be spellbound now, it will repay cellaring for the next decade at least, providing years of delicious enjoyment.

The Producer

Plantagenet Wines' history goes back to 1968, when Tony Smith (of the WH Smith family) emigrated to Australia's Great Southern region, in Western Australia. Sheep farming was all well and good, but Smith had visions of planting vineyards too, and one of the pioneering Mount Barker (a sub region of the Great Southern) was born.

Tony Smith claims to trace his lineage back to the famous English Royal house, so the name Plantagenet was chosen for the new winery. Today Plantagenet is known for its super-stylish Cabernet Sauvignon, with Shiraz and Pinot Noir also exceptional. Their Chardonnay and Riesling wines have also captured the attention of Australia's top wine writers.

The Winemaker

Following in the footsteps of top Australian winemakers John Durham and Cath Oates, now it's Luke Eckersley's turn to continue Plantagenet's meteoric rise. Raised on the family farm in Great Southern, Luke gained winemaking experience in Europe and North America after his studies at Curtin University.

Just three years into his role as Senior Winemaker at Plantagenet, Luke's efforts are clearly paying dividends. Two small parcels of grapes from Wyjup are the raw ingredients for this superb Cabernet Sauvignon, where the warm days coupled with cool nights make for ideal ripening conditions. Kid gloves in the winery, including 20 months oak ageing (with 40% new oak), complete the impressive picture.

The Region

Right down on Australia's south-western tip lies the Great Southern region. Covering quite some area, it's not surprisingly divided into the sub-regions of Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Porongurup, and Mount Barker.

Sharing similar soils to the Margaret River region, Mount Barker sees large distances between vineyards, interspersed with stunning, wild landscapes that attract tourists for their breath-taking wildflower displays.

A continental climate is offset by cool nights, thanks to breezes from the Southern Ocean. Rainfall, at around 6-700mm per year, is just about perfect for growing vines. Wines from here take on a unique character, that's led to their being highly sought-after both in Australia and further afield.
