We've one of the biggest ranges of Portuguese wines in the UK. They're among our most popular too, finding firm friends wherever they're tasted.

The brilliant winemaker behind many of them is José Neiva Correia. The first sniff of this delectable Portuguese white wine will leave you in no doubt as to its quality. Lively, fruity both on the nose and the palate, the blend of four grape varieties is beautifully judged.

This is the sort of white wine to reach for when you're out to impress. Cook something really good, pull the cork, and relax in Portuguese wine heaven.

This aromatic, floral wine has ripe apple and pear fruit and a rich, creamy texture. It has immediately attractive fruitiness and fully integrated acidity. A delicious wine to drink now. Wine Enthusiast 88 pts Best Buy

The Producer

Founded by winemaking legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price! DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

The Winemaker

José’s winemaking CV is as impressive as the wines themselves. With both his mothers and fathers' families involved in winemaking, José and his seven brothers and sisters grew up on the Quinta de Porto Francos estate, now part of the DJF estate and one of the oldest in the region. With nearly 40 years’ experience in winemaking under his belt, José honed his skills at co-operative wineries and as a consultant to independent producers all over Europe.

In the words of Tim Atkin MW: “José deserves great credit for his contribution to the transformation of Portuguese wine. He is equally adept at making top-end wines as he is producing inexpensive mass market blends, using international and local grapes with considerable skill. The Portuguese wine revolution wouldn't have happened without him.“

The Region

Sunshine is not in short supply in this picturesque region of rolling hills, yet cooling Atlantic breezes allow for a long, slow ripening period for the grapes which lends a fresh, elegant touch to the wines. A total of seventeen grape varieties are grown across a wide area with white varieties are planted in cooler vineyards nearer the ocean, red varieties in warmer vineyards further inland. Extensive research is always on the cards, and José is credited with the introduction of several new varietals to the region including Albarino, Pinot Noir and more recently Dornfelder.

A Portuguese Gem

Over the years, Portuguese wine has gradually become more available. If you don't recognise the grape varieties, don't worry; the combination makes for a lovely, crisp blend (without being sharp) and a lovely finish. If you want to try white wine from this country, this is a good one to tantalise your taste buds.

Spicy Pork Curry

Try this aromatic pork dish with its layers of complex spice with a vibrant, ripe white (not too dry) or sparkling wines which will balance out the heat of the curry without overshadowing the rich flavours. The fruitiness of the Portada Reserva will off-set the spice perfectly.

Crab Cakes

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white which doesn't overpower the meat - try aromatic Southern European whites which will naturally complement seafood dishes, such as this seductively aromatic Portuguese wine.

Fusion Prawn and Vegetable Curry

The fragrance and flavours of coconut, chilli and ginger hold their own and can only be complemented by a fruity, light white. Match this curry with Portuguese whites. The floral, fruit-forward style it's a beautiful match.
