You'll probably already know that Gascony, in South-West France, is high on the list for great wines, especially whites and rosés that won't cost the earth. That's why we headed there to put together our own 'house' white, and it's a real stunner.

The history of Carinena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Carinena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking.

Vinas Alto Roble (meaning tall oak) call the beautiful town of Yerbas Buenas in the Maule Valley home, although vineyard sites are scattered the length and breadth of the Central Valley area in the Colchagua, Curico and Maule production areas. Casa Vinicola Poletti was established in 1928 by Aurelia Poletti on the outskirts of Imola. The company owns 50 hectares of vineyards in the Emilia Romagna region and produce 20 million litres of wine per year both from grapes they grow as well as from other selected growers. The natural ridge of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola is a wonderful sight, protruding from the horizon of the hills, giving a unique aspect to the landscape. And it’s just there, right in the heart of this spectacular landscape, that the vineyards can be found. The wines of Poletti tell the story of this historical region.

Il Faggio Italian Red wine is made by Alana McGettigan at one of the region's best co-operatives in the northern part of the Abruzzi. The aim is to capture in the bottle the power and intensity of the grape, together with a lift and freshness which is seldom found in Montepulciano wines from this area. The name Il Faggio derives from the fabulous beech trees which proliferate in this area, especially in the Abruzzo national park.

Definitely a favorite

We have tried this wine a few times now as part of mixed cases, and it's become our go-to favourite. It has never disappointed, with food or on its own. Smooth, with just the right amount of fruitiness - neither overpowering nor too delicate - and every sip transports us from dreary weather to memories of summer and warm, delicious locations. Excellent, easy-drinking wine at an excellent price

Medium bodied wine with an initial hint of cherries and other fruit flavours, followed by a discernible vanilla finish, though I could not detect the promised fig flavours. Lighter alcohol content (ideal for mid-week) and good value for a very drinkable wine, with or without food accompaniment.
