Hubert & Fils Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2018, Rhône

0 review(s)

We're always on the lookout for great value, reliable quaffing wines for our wine racks at home and France always seems to provide rich pickings. When we tasted this juicy estate-bottled Côtes du Rhône we were sure we'd found a future French favourite. This is a step up from most Côtes du Rhône wines and is smooth, fruity and very tasty.

The Producer

Hubert & Fils have been producing red Côtes du Rhône wines for years, so they really know a thing or two about winemaking. They prefer to bottle their wines in house, seeing production through from harvest to vinification, right through to bottling, which really is a sign of a conscientious producer.

Tartiflette

This rustic French bistrot-style dish of baked cheese, potato and bacon is just perfect with a classic French red wine like Hubert & Fils Côtes du Rhône Rouge, 2018. Full recipe

Top 10 Best-Selling Red Wine

A full-bodied red to behold, if ever I could be swayed it would be this Portuguese wine to shy from my trusted French wines, it's a great alternative and refreshing to find such structure and delight in a red. Gareth

The Producer

Founded by winemaking legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DFJ Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition 2012.

Beef Carpaccio with Cherry & Citrus Vinaigrette

Not always the easiest dish to pair with wine, the main element of this Carpaccio is the punchy vinaigrette which needs a wine with good acidity and fruit flavour. The meat denotes a need for a red wine, but plump for fresh, medium bodied styles with peppery or spicy notes to complement the rare beef. Try the Grand' Arte Shiraz, Lisboa for size. Full recipe

The history of Carinena has been closely related with wine for many centuries and the reputation of its wines are now being recognised around the world. In 1415 when the King of Spain heard that Fernando 1 of Aragon was planning a trip to Nice he asked Fernando to take with him some of the wines from Carinena. In 2002 a new modern winery was built with state of the art facilities but keeping many of the good traditions of Spanish winemaking.

Baron de Badassière Syrah 2017, Côtes de Thau, France

‘A lick of spice initially to the black cherry fruit and integrated wood notes...You can almost see the wine lying on a sun lounger and taking in the rays, and starting its day with a Gitane and a café noir.’

Woody berry and clove aromas introduce this chewy, extracted Monastrell. Solid tannins drive its herbal plum and berry flavours, with ample woodspice and a peppery, clove-like finish. Wine Enthusiast, 88 pts

This is an exceptional red wine and it goes down well on a Friday evening coming back home from work. Note to self: need to try it with a selection of cheeses next time!

Best of the box

Tobacco, leather and bergamot nose; slightly bitter palate of dark fruits, not overly sweet and medium-heavy on the tannins. Went very well with a spicy Korean lamb dish (would also work with Greek, Spanish or Mexican - basically any heavily flavoured red meats). Love the bottle, love the wine.
