This Gran Reserva blends 85% Tempranillo with Mazuelo and Graciano grapes to produce a smooth, seductive masterpiece. Ageing in French and American oak for twenty-four months adds plenty of sweet spice, while a further thirty-six months in bottle softens the dense fruit flavours. The resulting wine is ripe and rich, complete with bramble fruit, red cherry and a liberal dash of spice. Very appealing, with a finish that goes on and on...

Buy this if...you love mature oak-aged reds.

Generous, ripe Gran Reserva packed with flavours of kirsch and sweet spice.

The Producer

Bodegas Navajas is a family run winery situated in the village of Navarrete, in the heart of the Rioja region. The bodega was founded in 1918 but it wasn’t until 1983 when the Navajas family finally took complete control of the winery which has seen a dramatic improvement in quality ever since. The Bodega is run by Antonio Navajas and his wife, Rosa Maria Gandarias. Their son, Roberto, is responsible for production and quality control and their daughter, Mercedes, is in charge of exports.

The Winemaker

Son Roberto is in charge of the winemaking, with the classic ageing periods for Rioja wines. A brand new barrel ageing area installed in 2005 allows for a state-of-the-art winemaking facility combined with age-old tradition.

The Region

The Rioja region is in north eastern of Spain, located south of the Cantabrian Mountains, which help to isolate the region from the fierce winds and maritime influences. Most of Rioja’s wines are red made predominantly from the Tempranillo grape. The region has three districts: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. Rioja Alta is Rioja’s fullest in terms of fruit and concentration with lovely velvety smooth tastes. Reds are made predominantly from Tempranillo and Garnacha with Graciano and Carinena playing bit parts.

Game Sausage Rolls

Who needs a plain old sausage roll when you can have a game sausage roll? The ultimate buffet nibble, these will go nicely with a medium bodied red with rich, dark fruit flavours to pair with the gamey notes. Try a Rioja Gran Reserva and you won't be disappointed.

Roast Duck

Balance out the fattiness of the roast duck with fruity, crisp European reds - oak-aged Rioja provides the mature fruit flavours and softly spiced notes with good acidity.

Beef Stew & Dumplings

A hearty rich stew calls for a ripe, savoury red, rather than very rich, full bodied styles - think mature Rioja or Claret with good freshness on the finish. We'd recommend our Bodegas Navajas Rioja Gran Reserva.
