What do you get when you add 35% Sauvignon Blanc, 26% Chardonnay and 21% Colombard, with 18% local grape heroes Petit Manseng and Ugni Blanc? This lip-smackingly refreshing French white wine, quite possibly one of the best value whites you can buy.

Gascony's rolling hills and vineyards prove their great ability to produce knockout wines at a very fair price. That and the skill of the team at Domaine de Pellehaut, where this Rude wine is made.

Looking for an ultra-reliable, everyday white wine that'll put a smile on your face whenever you open a bottle? We've gone the extra mile to make it, just for you.

Meet our very own contender for best value French white wine. You'll probably already know that Gascony, in South-West France, is high on the list for great wines, especially whites and rosés that won't cost the earth. That's why we headed there to put together our own 'house' white, and it's a real stunner.

The Producer

Domaine de Pellehaut is a family-owned property and chateau with 250 hectares of vines grown on slopes of up to 180m in altitude. The proximity to the Pyrenees provide a welcome shelter from bad weather, with very low rainfall and warm, sunny summers. Brothers Martin and Mathieu Beraut produce wines from both local and well-known grape varieties, including our very own Rude Reserve Blanc, a blend of Colombard and Chardonnay, with a smattering of Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng and Ugni Blanc.

Tom Cannavan's Review

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"The Cotes de Gascogne in the Southwest of France is a very happy hunting ground for well-priced and zinging fresh white wines. A blend of local varieties Petit Manseng, Colombard and Ugni Blanc, there's a little Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in there too, and yet it is a wine that will definitely please Sauvignon fans, with bursting and vivacious pea-shoot notes and mouth-watering tropical fruit like and mango and Ogen melon, allied to a dazzling fresh finish. Creamy pastas and risottos as well as goat's cheese will work really, but it's a crisp all-rounder." Tom's reviewing the 2017 vintage here

The Region

The beautiful Gers region may be one of France’s lesser-known tourist hotspots but then, off-the-beaten-track finds are often the best. Sitting in the heart of the south-west corner of France, this rural landscape, with the stunning backdrop of the Pyrenees, is home to the Côtes de Gascogne, now France’s largest white wine producing area.

White wine, excellent, easy to the taste with fish, or on it's own. Shall probably order as gifts for friends at Christmas. Again, well done Mr Blender.

Spicy Fish Braai

Super-simple but very effective, the spicy marinade on barbecued hake combines sweetness, heat and plenty of flavour. Try a tropical-fruited, aromatic white wine such as a Côtes de Gascogne blend.

Salmon & Grains Salad

This ultra-healthy herby number needs a floral citrussy white with a good weight of fruit. Our very own Rude Reserve Blanc will work wonders.

Chilean Fish Stew

Pair rich fish stews with vibrant, zesty whites such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc which have enough fruit flavour to balance out the punchy garlic, herbs and tomatoes. Or, you could try a blend of the two with our Rude Reserve Blanc from Côtes de Gascogne?
