Vegan wines? What's that all about then? It all comes down to fining. The process which makes your wines nice and translucent, bright and inviting. Use animal-derived products, like casein (from milk), albumen (egg whites), or isinglass (from fish) and it's a no-no for vegans.

With a pair of each, you can experiment with your favourite vegan recipes, to find the best vegan wine-food pairings. Six white, six red wines, showing you can enjoy great wines with a clear conscience.

Alta Corte 2016, Lisboa

1 review(s)

A blend of the rare Caladoc grape with Tinta Roriz, this wine is all juicy fruit. Yes, a light sense of structure gives the wine shape, but the bold berry fruits give it a refreshing, ready-to-drink character. Enjoy now. Wine Enthusiast 87 pts

The Producer

Founded by wine-making legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

This maybe in the Languedoc, but the very special conditions of the Terrasses du Larzac region are key to the wines special style. North-west of Montpellier the land climbs towards the Larzac plateau. Here the difference between day and night time temperatures can vary as much as 20˚C.

That means grapes take their time reaching optimal ripeness, and that time quite literally translates into better flavours.
It became part of Domaines Paul Mas in 2010 and has since expanded to 42ha of vineyards. We were struck by the classic nature of the Cabernet Sauvignon, and have shipped directly from the producer to bring you this stunning wine.

Veal with Creamy Mushrooms and Cavalo Nero

Veal can pair well with both reds or structured whites - try a southern French red from Domaine des Crès Ricards or fresh Gewurztraminer with enough acidity to cut through the creamy sauce but not overshadow the delicate meat. Full recipe

Edgebaston’s The Pepper Pot red blend tastes as if it has a shake of pepper, but it’s far more appealing, adding seasoning to the dark berry flavours. David Williams, The Guardian

Small in size but large in stature, Edgebaston consists of just 22 hectares of vines. David oversees all vineyard and winemaking activity, with a holistic and quality-driven approach. The estate uses only organic fertilisers in the vineyards and care is taken at every step of the winemaking process to ensure that all wines are produced in the most environmentally friendly manner. The wines are enticing, fresh and pure, with an underlying but unmistakable European influence. As you might have guessed, awards are ten-a-penny, with Edgebaston wines regularly receiving top points in South African wine bible, The Platter Guide and the winery a winner in The Wine Merchant Top 100 awards.

Baked Stuffed Aubergine with Walnuts & Roquefort

With a lot of strong, rich flavours in this baked dish, you need to match the salty cheese with acidic tomato, savoury aubergine and nuts. Try a medium to full-bodied red just like The Pepper Pot, it has enough fruit flavour to contrast with the saltiness in the cheese. Full recipe

Fruity Pork

Succulent roast pork with a rich fruity sauce needs a wine with ripe, generous fruit and crisp, mineral acidity to balance out the sweetness of the sauce. We'd go for a ripe, new world white such as Chenin Blanc with enough weight to take on the meat and fruit combination. Full recipe

A recent addition to the Domaines Paul Mas collection in 2013, this 100ha estate lies near Carcassonne. Vines are planted on an old saltwater marsh, so in winter they’re deliberately flooded to reduce the salt content of the soils.

It’s also an area where phylloxera can’t survive, meaning they can plant ungrafted vines in these special soils. These cover some 18 different grape varieties, certified by Terra Vitis for its sustainable practices.

Our buyer was struck by the brilliant Chardonnay, and so we decided to ship directly to bring it to you at the best possible price.

Well balanced

Lovely juicy, drinkable wine with date/fig on the nose and palate.
A reasonably priced wine that punches well above its weight.

Pepper Pot

In The Press:
"I’ve always been suspicious of wines named for the specific flavour they contain. It suggests the wine has been made to a formula, rather than being a spontaneous reflection of a vineyard. Edgebaston’s The Pepper Pot red blend tastes as if it has a shake of pepper, but it’s far more appealing, adding seasoning to the dark berry flavours." David Williams, The Guardian, August 2015

First Class Chenin

Drink it straight from the fridge and enjoy this as a great aperitif. Or match it with fish or chicken and it's complex ripe flavours come through - pow... We made chicken with a herb, cheese and lemon crust and the Chenin matched it perfectly. We loved this wine - how can it be so fruity and dry too? Looking forward to ordering more!

Freshness and depth

A light tasting wine yet comes with a bit of depth to its character. Not too minerally either. A very drinkable, refreshing wine.

Citrus zest

For those that like their wines to have a citrus zest this is probably a five star wine. Personally I prefer Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay but still very much enjoyed this wine though the zest was slightly overdone for my taste.

Refreshing easy-drinking wine.

I was very impressed with this lovely wine which is one of the best whites I have tried. It has a strong pleasant bouquet without being overpowering. After a first whiff I anticipated a great wine and was not disappointed. It is very refreshing and has an excellent finish. I recently included this wine in my presentation at the wine club section of my local bowls club and everyone really enjoyed it, rating it very highly, even the most critical members.

An enjoyable surprise

Very much enjoyed this wine with quiche and salad today, so much so that contrary to my usual attitude to being determined never to review anything at all, I felt compelled to check where I bought it from and then to tell anyone who cares to read this that it's very, very quaffable. Crisp and refreshing, and not too alcoholic. No, I didn't drink the whole bottle, but I could have, very easily.

Summer wine for all occasions

Just enjoyed this wine with barbecue steak and salad. The fruit and zest balance worked well and left a clean fruit on the palate. Can't wait to try this wine with a creamy pasta dish maybe with some salmon.
