This medium dry Gewurztraminer is intensely aromatic, as should be expected, with classic heady notes of lychee, honeysuckle and mango. The palate is refreshing and ripe, with stone fruit flavours, a hint of spice, and a smooth and long finish. This gained an impressive 87/100 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Try it with Vietnamese and Thai cooking, or with strong cheeses (Munster, Maroilles, Livarot would be perfect).

Buy this if...you love a floral, honeyed white.

87 points - Wine Enthusiast 2018

What's special about Gewurztraminer? Taste a top wine like this from France's Alsace region, and you'll soon find out. It's the easiest of all grape varieties for a beginner to recognise, thanks to heady rose petal and lychee aromas. Just 'Gewurz' for short if you like, don't let the name put you off a great wine

The Producer

The small, family-run estate of Domaine Michel Fonné can be found in the commune of Bennwihr, just north of Colmar. Twelve hectares of vineyard, including the Grand Cru Marckrain, are cultivated with all seven Alsatian varietals. More than 80% of the total production is now exported around the world.

The Winemaker

Owner and winemaker Michel Fonné qualified as a winemaker from Dijon and got hands on experience in Champagne and in the Alexander Valley in California. He returned in 1989 to take over the reins of his uncle René Barth’s estate.

The Region

Acting as a natural barrier against bad weather, the Vosges Mountains have a starring role in the success story of Alsatian wines. The east facing slopes are sunny warm and perfect for grape growing, with very low rainfall for such a northerly region.

Spicy Pork Curry

Try this aromatic pork dish with its layers of complex spice with a vibrant, ripe white (not too dry) which will balance out the heat of the curry without overshadowing the rich flavours. This dish is screaming out for Michel Fonné's Gewurztraminer.

Veal with Creamy Mushrooms and Cavalo Nero

Veal can pair well with soft, light reds or structured whites - try a fresh Guwurztraminer with enough acidity to cut through the creamy sauce but not overshadow the delicate meat.

Bacon Wrapped Scallops

Match the delicate scallops and smoky bacon with a structured medium-bodied white - try Alsatian Gewurztraminer with ripe fruit to contrast with the smoky bacon and salty scallops.
