This Riesling is sourced from a 35 year old vineyard on sandstone soils in the commune of Bennwihr. If you let your mind wander, you might smell buttery toast with honey but that's where the breakfast mentions stop. The style is dry and ripe with mouth-watering lemon and apple fruit, lean, racy and with a smooth, honeyed finish. Try this with white fish, seafood or lightly spiced Asian dishes.

The Producer

The small, family-run estate of Domaine Michel Fonné can be found in the commune of Bennwihr, just north of Colmar. Twelve hectares of vineyard, including the Grand Cru Marckrain, are cultivated with all seven Alsatian varietals. More than 80% of the total production is now exported around the world.

The Winemaker

Owner and winemaker Michel Fonné qualified as a winemaker from Dijon and got hands on experience in Champagne and in the Alexander Valley in California. He returned in 1989 to take over the reins of his uncle René Barth’s estate.

The Region

Acting as a natural barrier against bad weather, the Vosges Mountains have a starring role in the success story of Alsatian wines. The east facing slopes are sunny warm and perfect for grape growing, with very low rainfall for such a northerly region.

Spicy Fish Braai

Super-simple but very effective, the spicy marinade on barbecued fish combines sweetness, heat and plenty of flavour. Try a white with bright fruit flavours and good acidity such as Riesling.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Comfort food at its best, a warming noodle soup pairs well with crisp, bone dry white wines with good structure.

Sole Meunière

The fresh notes of lemon and parsley marry well with fresh, citrussy notes in the wine so try a ripe but dry Alsatian white which will also have enough body to cope with the meat.
