Malbec may be Argentina's go-to grape but Cabernet this good is a rival to some Bordeaux at a higher price. Aromas full of black cherries and blackberries leads on to a rich palate of dark fruits - it's the blackberries that got us. This is medium bodied but with firm tannins that give it a little extra body. It's well balanced with a finish that just keeps on going. A good match for fattier meats such as pork or lamb or with full flavoured cheeses.

Buy this if...you're branching out from Bordeaux.

Fine example of top Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon red wine, which happens to be great value too. That's down to some fine Mendoza vineyards, and the fact it's made by one of Argentina's best wineries, Zuccardi. Great grapes, pedigree, meticulous winemaking, and you've a South American wine classic

The Producer

Three generations of the Zuccardi family have presided over the company since it was founded by engineer Alberto Zuccardi in 1963. Planting vines in the Maipu province of Mendoza, Alberto was one of the first producers to experiment with irrigation systems. Fast forward fifty years and current owner Sebastián Zuccardi was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 by the International Wine Challenge. Social and environmental responsibility is high on the agenda for this prominent company and initiatives include the protection of over 70 hectares of woodland and 1100 hectares where the native flora and fauna are protected.

The Winemaker

Following a degree in oenology, Rubén Ruffo has worked more than 20 vintages in the winery and also manages to fit in numerous overseas trips to gain experience in wineries in France, Italy and all over Spain. His enthusiasm for his job is infectious and his precise, detailed approach is evident across the Zuccardi range and rewarded in multiple awards.

The Region

Mendoza is the country's largest wine province, producing over 80% of Argentina's total wine production and with more than 160,000 hectares of cultivated vineyards. The Suelo Argentino and St Veronica wines are produced in one of Mendoza’s most historic vineyard areas in the east of the region, planted at altitudes of between 640 -750m above sea level. This area copes well with both white and red varietals, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin and Torrontés among the whites and Shiraz, Malbec, Bonarda and Tempranillo for the reds - with the St Veronica wines made specifically from grapes grown in the southern, higher altitude Uco Valley.

Fromage Fort

A brilliant recipe to use up odds and ends of cheese - your final wine choice will depend slightly on which cheeses you use but plump for a smooth, fruity red, just like the St Veronica Cabernet Sauvignon, and you won't be far wrong.

BBQ Lamb Kebabs

Pair grilled or barbecued lamb with lightly oaked reds - try bright, fruit-driven New World reds with Cabernet, Shiraz or Grenache. We'd recommend heading to Mendoza, Argentina for a great selection.

Feijoada

A robust, gutsy Portuguese pork stew that's not for the faint-hearted, this needs a full, ripe red wine to stand up to the porky flavours. Try big New World reds such as the St Veronica Cabernet Sauvignon.
