The Producer

Three generations of the Zuccardi family have presided over the company since it was founded by engineer Alberto Zuccardi in 1963. Planting vines in the Maipu province of Mendoza, Alberto was one of the first producers to experiment with irrigation systems. Fast forward fifty years and current owner Sebastián Zuccardi was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 by the International Wine Challenge. Social and environmental responsibility is high on the agenda for this prominent company and initiatives include the protection of over 70 hectares of woodland and 1100 hectares where the native flora and fauna are protected.

"Made by the highly respected Zuccardi family for Rude Wines, this has a deep, saturated colour, but not dense, with some light on the rim. Fine nose, a little of Malbec’s violet lift to the dark cherry and blueberry aromas. In the mouth it is quite creamy and substantial, the fruit dark and sweet, but a smoothing layer of oak, rounding tannins and cherry-pit acidity keep it fresh"

The Region

Mendoza is the country's largest wine province, producing over 80% of Argentina's total wine production and with more than 160,000 hectares of cultivated vineyards. The Suelo Argentino and St Veronica wines are produced in one of Mendoza’s most historic vineyard areas in the east of the region, planted at altitudes of between 640 -750m above sea level. This area copes well with both white and red varietals, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin and Torrontés among the whites and Shiraz, Malbec, Bonarda and Tempranillo for the reds - with the St Veronica wines made specifically from grapes grown in the southern, higher altitude Uco Valley.

Easy but not too easy

I'm forever in search of wines that I can enjoy without food-matching, and this can be as tricky with reds as with whites. Hence a leaning towards the lighter-bodied. I can't challenge the above views of St. Veronica Malbec Reserva as a more substantial red but I can testify that the glass before the meal (or after) works just as well as the one with.
