An incredible sweet wine that has to be tried at least once...The colour is like dark, caramelised butter with dense aromas of Turkish Delight, tobacco and espresso. The palate is balanced and complex with flavours of rich raisin fruit, rose petal, dried fig and kumquat. The finish is long but not too sweet. This featured in The Wine Merchant Top 100 in 2017. Delicious when served with a rich chocolate tart.

The Producer

In 1885 Timothy Stanton abandoned his occupation as a mechanic in West Suffolk and took his family to Australia in search of gold. When the gold ran out the Stanton family stayed. It wasn’t until 1948 that Norman Killeen married into the family and joined the business. Now Norman’s grandchildren, Natasha and Simon, are the seventh generation to pick up the reins. Arguably the world’s richest wines, these 'stickies' are fabulous wines of intensity with layers of rich and vibrant flavours ranging from raisins and rose petals to toffee, marmalade and dates.

The Winemaker

Winemaker Andrew Drumm started out his career in the oil industry as a chemical engineer but his love of wine eventually brought him in to the wine trade as winemaker for Charles Sturt University's commercial winery. He also trained students in winemaking for twelve years before arriving as winemaker at Stanton and Killeen in 2014.

The Region

Situated in rural north-east Victoria, Rutherglen is a three hour drive from Melbourne and four from Canberra. The Murray River cuts through the lansdcape dotted with around twenty wineries producing dry wines and the famous sweet Rutherglen fortifieds. Vines came to the region in the days of the Gold Rush in the 1850s and the area developed a focus on rich fortified styles, thanks to the band of loam soils on the hillside vineyards and the continental climate with hot days and cold nights.

Flourless Chocolate Torte

The rule of thumb with chocolate desserts is to match sweetness with sweetness but think of the fruity notes in dark chocolate which pair well with both very fruity reds or rich fortified Muscats from Rutherglen which hold their own against the different layers of flavour.

Sticky Toffee Pudding

There’s no need for an introduction. A large bowl of this with an equally sticky and sweet dessert wine and we’ll see you on the other side. We'd head straight to Stanton & Killeen's Classic Rutherglen Muscat for a real treat.

Fig & Blue Cheese Tart

The ripe, salty tang of blue cheese contrast brilliantly with the luscious, dried fruit notes of fortified Rutherglen Muscat with rich, caramel flavours.
