Cutting edge Australian winemaking, using grapes from three vineyards in the Grampians wine region. It's a blend of Shiraz from the Hyde Park Vineyard, the Westgate Vineyard (with its 45-years-old vines), and the balance from Rice's Vineyard.

The result is an Australian Shiraz that showcases the Grampians' silky smooth style of red wine, with strawberries and cream notes, ample red fruit flavours, with a subtle herby background. Lifted, soft, approachable, it's a Shiraz of impeccable breeding.

Unfined and unfiltered, it's exciting that any ever got to leave Australia's shores, with only around 800 dozen being produced.

Beautifully balanced and structured Grampians Shiraz. It's when you taste Australian red wines like this, you begin to understand how regional variation can play such a big part in the final wine. Serious Shiraz for those who refuse to compromise

The Producer

What do you do when you've a degree in ancient Greek literature, and desperately want to delay being sucked into the real world? Take a course in wine technology and marketing, of course, and set up a garagiste style winery in the suburbs of Melbourne.

That's what Rory Lane did, with no family connection to winemaking and no vineyards to his name. Instead, deciding that 'every wine tells a story', he sources grapes from some top sites in Victoria's Grampians and Henty wine regions.

In a short space to time since 2004, The Story Wines are now one of Australia's best wineries, awarded five-red-star status by James Halliday.

Simple, hands-off winemaking sums up The Story's approach to their wines. Grapes are usually harvested early, transported to the winery two to three hours away in the suburbs of Melbourne, and gravity-fed into small open fermenters. They're fermented using ambient yeasts, with no additions bar a touch of sulphur dioxide.

Rory Lane's fascination with 'the wondrous connection between land, human and liquid' has led to some of Australia's most satisfying wines. They now run a short fiction competition too, with the top three results being printed in full on the labels, so you get a short story with every bottle. As they say, every wine is a story.

The Region

Australia's Grampians wine region is known for making wines with elegance, beauty, and power. Once a hotbed of gold mining, vines too have long been a part of its landscape. Indeed, there are some that to date no-one has managed to identify, and are quite possibly the only surviving examples in the world.

It's seen as a cooler-climate wine region, with winds from the Southern Ocean providing a mitigating influence on the Mediterranean-like weather. Later-ripening red grape varieties, like Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, thrive in the Grampians region. It's home to some of Australia's best wineries, with the likes of Mount Langi Ghiran, Seppelt, and Best's Wines all finding a home here.

Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce

This robust, flavoursome cut is nicely balanced by the punchy, herby sauce. Skirt needs a relatively well-structured red to soften the meat flavours, so try plump New World Shiraz or Cabernet such as The Story Grampians Shiraz.

Carolina Style Ribs

A classic Southern barbecue recipe with a sweet, sticky rub calls for a rich, spice-laden red to square up to the complex layers of spice in the dish. Cook long and slow with a glass of ripe, warming Grampians Shiraz in hand.

Sausages With Mushroom and Olives

Quick to prepare and packed with flavour, this sausage stew will work well with smooth, medium-bodied earthy reds with red fruit flavours. Try a plummy Sangiovese or ripe, spiced Australian Shiraz for starters.
