Flavours of Summer Case

Flavours of Summer Case

‘It’s summer in a bottle!’ Quite a familiar description for white and rosé wines (and on rare occasions, perhaps even a red), but one that can be interpreted in different ways. Pretty much every bottle of chilled wine can be described as a summer wine because it is indeed cold and can bring refreshment on a hot day. But when talking about summer flavours in wine, it pays to be a bit more specific.

There are certain smells and flavours that can really hit the spot when we experience them. Short of going around sniffing or tasting these very specific things ourselves, wine is pretty amazing in the way it can replicate these characteristics, whilst also providing us with a tasty tipple. So if you’re in search of a bit of real summer in a bottle, here are some wines you can find those summer flavours. Simply scroll through to see what we've got in store for you.

Many wines have aromas and flavours of some of the most wonderful summer scents and tastes, like elderflowers and freshly cut grass, tropical fruits, honeysuckle and orange blossom, strawberries and watermelon. These can all be found within this magical wine selection. With this case you'll pay only £7.79 per bottle. Of course, there are some summer scents that you might not be able to find in most wines – the smell of sunscreen and swimming pools for example. And thank goodness for that.

Humita Crème Brulée

A modern take on a traditional South American dish, humita is made from fresh corn often blended with onions and spices, in this case blended into a savoury crème brulée. Egg-based dishes can be a bit tricky to pair with wines but a bright, juicy white from Suelo in Argentina does the trick here. Full recipe

This was my first bottle of wine from Rude Wines. If the rest are as good as this I will be delighted. We matched it with scallops and chorizo and it enhanced the food very well. David

Michel Fonné Gewurztraminer 2015, Alsace

0 review(s)

What's special about Gewurztraminer? Taste a top wine like this from France's Alsace region, and you'll soon find out. It's the easiest of all grape varieties for a beginner to recognise, thanks to heady rose petal and lychee aromas. Just 'Gewurz' for short if you like, don't let the name put you off a great wine

Spicy Pork Curry

Try this aromatic pork dish with its layers of complex spice with a vibrant, ripe white (not too dry) which will balance out the heat of the curry without overshadowing the rich flavours. This dish is screaming out for Michel Fonné's Gewurztraminer. Full recipe

Founded by winemaking legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

Portuguese Salt Cod

The robust flavour of salt cod with spicy piri piri can stand up to a red wine such as a Pinot Noir. So there's no need to match this white fish with a white wine on this occasion - try the fruity, balanced Paxis with soft tannins to stand up to the rich fish and vibrant seasoning. Full recipe

Different but wonderfull

Amazing ice breaker at a recent wine group meeting. Unusual combination produced surprisingly complex aroma and a soft fruity palate. We felt it would pair with spicier Thai cuisine but we loved it on its own.

Must buy

This is a fantastic wine that ticks all my boxes. I loved the balance of tropical fruit with a hint of honey in there. It has a long elegant finish. I had it with smoked mussels but this is a wine you can drink on its own. A great find.
Thank you!

Beauty in a glass

A strawberry rose that has real strawberry flavour without any of the sweet cloyingness that the description can imply. Excellent.

Not bad

I see this wine is popular. There is certainly nothing wrong with it but personally, it just didn't float my boat.

Malbec

I love Malbec, probably a bit too much. This was one of the most interesting, good flavours with a great mouth feel, great on its own or with punchy foods. I paired with a Spicy Okra curry and it held its own
