The Best Aromatic Wines Mixed

Our sense of smell is key when it comes to enjoying wines. It's always a pleasure to take a good sniff of the wine before the first sip, to really get a sense of the wine's character. It gets the taste buds going and adds to the overall enjoyment of wine. Some wine grapes can be particularly expressive on the nose, and with this in mind, we've put together a case of some of our favourite wines which have a strong aromatic character. Think Sauvignon Blanc (wet gooseberry bushes), Semillon (herbs) and Cabernet Sauvignon (blackcurrants). There's a whole world of wine scents out there, so let this case be a starting point on your discovery of wine's aroma.

A heady case of red, white and rose wines specially chosen for their aromatic character. Rewarding drinking with pure enjoyment in mind.

The Producer

Family-owned Domaine de Cassagnau is situated in the heart of the Languedoc region, due south of Carcasonne. The success of the estate has very much relied on the women of the family, with Berthe Abet in charge of the domaine for six decades and through two world wars. A doctor by profession, Jacques inherited the estate from his mother, Berthe's daughter Jacqueline, and continues the family business with wife Collette.

This was my first bottle of wine from Rude Wines. If the rest are as good as this I will be delighted. We matched it with scallops and chorizo and it enhanced the food very well. David

Small in size but large in stature, Edgebaston consists of just 22 hectares of vines. David oversees all vineyard and winemaking activity, with a holistic and quality-driven approach. The estate uses only organic fertilisers in the vineyards and care is taken at every step of the winemaking process to ensure that all wines are produced in the most environmentally friendly manner. The wines are enticing, fresh and pure, with an underlying but unmistakable European influence. As you might have guessed, awards are ten-a-penny, with Edgebaston wines regularly receiving top points in South African wine bible, The Platter Guide and the winery a winner in The Wine Merchant Top 100 awards.

The Producer

Founded by wine-making legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

Star red wine we discovered at Vinitaly, the huge wine fair in Verona. Struck by its hints of spices and vanilla., we just had to get some in. If you love Sangiovese, we think you'll be smitten by a glassful of this full and harmonious Italian number.

The Producer

Casa Vinicola Poletti was established in 1928 by Aurelia Poletti on the outskirts of Imola. The company owns 50 hectares of vineyards in the Emilia Romagna region and produce 20 million litres of wine per year both from grapes they grow as well as from other selected growers. The natural ridge of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola is a wonderful sight, protruding from the horizon of the hills, giving a unique aspect to the landscape. And it’s just there, right in the heart of this spectacular landscape, that the vineyards can be found. The wines of Poletti tell the story of this historical region.

Blackened Steak With Red Wine Jus

A good tender steak is unbeatable and chargrilling adds extra depth of flavour. Choose a red with medium to full body and a decent amount of tannin to soften the texture of the steak. A savoury Sangiovese such as Viverello Sangiovese from Rubicone is perfect. Full recipe

An Outstanding Rose

Our first Rose from our mixed case collection and what a first it proved to be. Once again heralding from the Languedoc, around Carcassonne, it's a lovely blend which includes Cabs Sauvignon and Franc along with, (and here's a surprise), Merlot! The result is a fabulously drinkable rose.

Beauty in a glass

A strawberry rose that has real strawberry flavour without any of the sweet cloyingness that the description can imply. Excellent.

Must buy

This is a fantastic wine that ticks all my boxes. I loved the balance of tropical fruit with a hint of honey in there. It has a long elegant finish. I had it with smoked mussels but this is a wine you can drink on its own. A great find.
Thank you!
