The Best, Rich, Red Wine Case

Have you noticed that when a wine is well made, there is something special about it? It's something you can't put your finger on but can widely be described as classy. It's what we all look for in a wine, but don't always find on the shelves of a supermarket or in most mass-produced wines. This is why at Rude wine we only sell wines that have had the utmost care and attention in their production. Wines that stop you in your tracks and have you jotting down their name so you remember to buy some more. We find the most memorable reds are rich and smooth and demonstrate the full character of the grapes with which they are made. This case showcases some of our most treasured finds from winemakers that really care about what goes into the bottle and how it was made. Wines made with love. Take the Edgebaston Syrah from Stellenbosch. Hand made at a small family winery by David Finlayson, an award-winning winemaker with years of experience, Or the Touriga Nacional made by Jose Neiva Correia, widely acclaimed as the winemaker whose modern winemaking techniques have put Portuguese wine back on the map. These are wines to savour and appreciate. One of life's simple pleasures, and well-deserved.

Some wines just stand out head and shoulders above the rest. These are the best, rich reds, with bags of character, they are fruity and smooth. Simply put, they won't let you down.

Klippenkop Pinotage 2018, Robertson

0 review(s)

Made from Pinotage, South Africa's flagship red grape, this is a dark, brooding wine, rich with black fruit and just a hint of chocolate. Always worth trying, we think you'll lap up this great value example.

Family owned winery Casas del Bosque was founded in 1993 by Juan Cuneo Solari. The son of an Italian immigrant, he had always dreamed of having his own vineyard and chanced upon an area of the Casablanca Valley, 100k due west of Santiago, with its pine forests, olive groves and small, white abandoned adobe houses. He chose to name the winery Casas del Bosque, or “Houses of the Forest.” The winemaking team are evangelical about translating the character of the vineyard and grape in to the final wine, using longer than average skin contact to extract extra flavour from the grapes. Some vineyards are under organic management and the winery is currently beginning the process towards Wines of Chile Sustainability Certification, which is the first step on the way to organic certification.

Woody berry and clove aromas introduce this chewy, extracted Monsatrell. Solid tannins drive its herbal plum and berry flavours, with ample woodspice and a peppery, clove-like finish. Wine Enthusiast, 88 pts

While it's delicious now, it will, like its French counterpart, improve with age: you could safely tuck it away in the cellar for six or seven years.'

Small in size but large in stature, Edgebaston consists of just 22 hectares of vines. David oversees all vineyard and winemaking activity, with a holistic and quality-driven approach. The estate uses only organic fertilisers in the vineyards and care is taken at every step of the winemaking process to ensure that all wines are produced in the most environmentally friendly manner. The wines are enticing, fresh and pure, with an underlying but unmistakable European influence. As you might have guessed, awards are ten-a-penny, with Edgebaston wines regularly receiving top points in South African wine bible, The Platter Guide and the winery a winner in The Wine Merchant Top 100 awards.

Frikkadels: South African Meatballs

These South African spiced meatballs are an easy pairing for red wines - the beef and pork combination will suit most medium-bodied reds but head for Merlot or Syrah for the right combination of soft fruit and structure. The Edgebaston Syrah would be a real treat. Full recipe

The Producer

Founded by winemaking legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. A simple philosophy with an ambitious aim: to transform the rich and diverse Portuguese varieties into top quality wines that are accessible to all. Quality and value for money are key, and the estate even buys in used oak barrels and employ two coopers to take them apart and strip them back to the new wood – as good as new for a fraction of the price. DJF is not short of fans, with more awards than any other Portuguese producer of the last 20 years, including red wine of the year at the IWC and twice Portuguese Winery of the Year in the New York Wine Competition since 2012.

Blue Cheese Burgers

Burgers are red wine are a match made in heaven but don't forget the blue cheese element which could scuper your wine choice. To contrast the creamy, salty notes (not forgetting acidity) of the cheese, head to full, fruity reds with good acidity - fresh Italian styles such as Valpolicella are a good bet. Full recipe

Best of the box

Tobacco, leather and bergamot nose; slightly bitter palate of dark fruits, not overly sweet and medium-heavy on the tannins. Went very well with a spicy Korean lamb dish (would also work with Greek, Spanish or Mexican - basically any heavily flavoured red meats). Love the bottle, love the wine.
