Produced from biodynamic vineyards in the Willunga foothills, with the Gulf St Vincent just 5km away, this Sangiovese is aged in large old oak barrels for around six months to add depth while retaining the fruit character, which it does in spades. Aromatic, earthy notes combine with morello cherries, while the palate marries kirsch, bramble fruit and herbs with powdery tannins and a ripe, long finish.

The Producer

Owner and winemaker of The Hedonist, Walter Clappis has worked more than 30 vintages in the McLaren Vale and his vineyards are all certified biodynamic. Walter concentrates his efforts on the production of premium red wines which are perfectly suited to the rich soils of the region, and has introduced varietals such as Tempranillo and Sangiovese. More recently one of the Hedonist wines was awarded Australia's best export wine of the year, chosen from more than 14,500 wines by an expert panel.

The Winemakers

The winemaking team is headed up by Walter Clappis, veteran of over 33 vintages, with hands-on help from daughter Kimberley and son-in-law James. Walter's winemaking pedigree includes 37 trophies and was the only winemaker to have won the prestigious Dan Murphy Trophy three times.

The Region

The McLaren Vale wine region is situated due south of Adelaide, sheltered by a range of hills to the south, and in close proximity to the sea to the west. The climate is soft and warm, with low rainfall and gentle transition from season to season. This is classic red wine country, with dry, full bodied reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in particular faring well.
