Rioja's top grape is re-interpreted in this stunning biodynamic Tempranillo. Walter Clappis produces this dark, aromatic version from biodynamic vineyards, ageing for a short period in old oak barrels to retain as much fruit character in the final wine. The nose is redolent of fruitcake, spice and all things nice, with a rich, mineral palate laced with silky strawberry and dried fruits.

Certified Bio-dynamic

The fresh medium-bodied palate has sour cherry notes that follow through to hints of cinnamon and underlying earthy tones, finishing with fine cocoa tannins.

The Winemaker

The winemaking team is headed up by Walter Clappis, veteran of over 33 vintages, with hands-on help from daughter Kimberley and son-in-law James. Walter's winemaking pedigree includes 37 trophies and was the only winemaker to have won the prestigious Dan Murphy Trophy three times. More recently one of the Hedonist wines was awarded Australia's best export wine of the year, chosen from more than 14,500 wines by an expert panel.

The Region

The McLaren Vale wine region is situated due south of Adelaide, sheltered by a range of hills to the south, and in close proximity to the sea to the west. The climate is soft and warm, with low rainfall and gentle transition from season to season. This is classic red wine country, with dry, full bodied reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in particular faring well.

Frikkadels

These South African spiced meatballs are an easy pairing for red wines - the beef and pork combination will suit most medium-bodied reds but head for juicy Tempranillo or Merlot blends for the right combination of soft fruit and structure. Try The Hedonist Tempranillo for starters.

Barbequed Garlic and Herb Mushrooms

When you think barbecue, it doesn't have to be just meat. This simple and tasty vegan recipe takes delicious large mushrooms (Portobello would be ideal), add some tasty herbs, and that smoky taste that everyone loves. Because mushrooms have a strong savoury taste, they work well with a wide range of red wines like our Australian The Hedonist Tempranillo.
