It's reckoned the be the best red grape variety in the Veneto. Not surprising given Corvina gives us such terrific wines like Amarone, Valpolicella and Bardolino. If you like red wines that aren't too heavy, have a really juicy-fruit taste, and are great value, then you'll love this wine.

No oak here; just bags of red cherry fruit, given just a little more oomph by ever so slightly drying the grapes before crushing. Sure, it's a wine that loves good Italian food, but you'll enjoy its charms on its own, or with a whole host of other dishes.

Along with Montepulciano, this could be your go-to Italian red wine.

Corvina's a chameleon Italian grape variety. Responsible for Amarone, Recioto plus a host of deliciously refreshing cherry-fruited red wines. This is one. The Producer

Sourcing grapes from over 700 hectares of vineyards and 250 growers, the Cantina Valpantena is one of Italy's largest and best co-operatives, situated in the Valpantena valley, north of the city of Verona. Established in 1958, the co-operative now makes wines from the surrounding appellations, with the Torre del Falasco wines showing their commitment to quality.

"Corvina is one of the main grapes of Amarone and Valpolicella, and as is the local tradition, the grapes for this wine were lightly dried before fermentation, to give a fuller and sweeter fruit profile. An inviting, juicy ruby colour, the aromas are of small dried berry fruits, a wisp of smoke, and a herby, curranty background. In the mouth there’s more of the same: it is dry, with tobacco, herb and dried cherry fruitiness, a good tannin framework and pert acidity"

The Region

With cool mountain breezes blowing directly down from the Dolomites and limestone soils on steeply sloped vineyards, the Valpantena valley in the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy is the perfect location for the production of both red and white wines. This is Valpolicella country, the grapes for which are grown on the steeply terraced hillside vineyards belonging to the cooperative, where soils are chalky and poor.
