The Producer

Three generations of the Zuccardi family have presided over the company since it was founded by engineer Alberto Zuccardi in 1963. Planting vines in the Maipu province of Mendoza, Alberto was one of the first producers to experiment with irrigation systems. Fast forward fifty years and current owner Sebastián Zuccardi was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 by the International Wine Challenge. Social and environmental responsibility is high on the agenda for this prominent company and initiatives include the protection of over 70 hectares of woodland and 1100 hectares where the native flora and fauna are protected.

The Producer

Family owned winery Casas del Bosque was founded in 1993 by Juan Cuneo Solari. The son of an Italian immigrant, he had always dreamed of having his own vineyard and chanced upon an area of the Casablanca Valley, 100k due west of Santiago, with its pine forests, olive groves and small, white abandoned adobe houses. He chose to name the winery Casas del Bosque, or “Houses of the Forest.” The winemaking team are evangelical about translating the character of the vineyard and grape in to the final wine, using longer than average skin contact to extract extra flavour from the grapes. Some vineyards are under organic management and the winery is currently beginning the process towards Wines of Chile Sustainability Certification, which is the first step on the way to organic certification.

Bodegas Navajas is a family run winery situated in the village of Navarrete, in the heart of the Rioja region. The bodega was founded in 1918 but it wasn’t until 1983 when the Navajas family finally took complete control of the winery which has seen a dramatic improvement in quality ever since. The Bodega is run by Antonio Navajas and his wife, Rosa Maria Gandarias. Their son, Roberto, is responsible for production and quality control and their daughter, Mercedes, is in charge of exports.

A historical Rhône estate since 1834 when Antoine Jaboulet began buying and farming the land around the town of Tain l’Hermitage, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has grown into one of the best known and most admired names in the Rhône Valley, synonymous with a broad range of top quality Rhône Cru and benchmark generic appellations. Six generations of the Jaboulet family carried on this family tradition, purchasing some of what would become the most prized vineyard locations in the region. An estate with 60ha covering three of the Roussillon’s key terroirs, Lauriga is known for producing red wines of classic character.

Whilst white and rosé wines are also made, it’s the Carignan and Grenache Noir that are stars here (with the help of some newcomers too, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvédre and Merlot.

Founded by winemaking legend José Neiva Correia in 1998, DJF Vinhos is located in the Lisboa region which stretches north along the coast from the capital Lisbon. Owned and managed by Gary and Cathy Jordan since 1993, this Stellenbosch farm has a history dating back over 300 years. Gary's a geologist, Cathy an economist by trade but together this husband and wife team is a phenomenon. Gary's parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the 146 hectare farm in 1982 and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specialising in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. Gary and Cathy worked internationally for two years, refining their high energy instincts with practical experience. They returned home in 1992 to build a new cellar and begin the winemaking odyssey that has cemented their position as one of the key players in the South African wine industry.

Searching for the ideal site to plant a vineyard proved to be a 20 year journey for winemaker Philip Shaw but the final choice came by accident as he flew over the rolling hills of Orange in New South Wales in 1988. Further investigation revealed a wonderful balance of sunshine, soil, differing aspects and of course the high altitude at 900m above sea level that contributes to the unique freshness and concentration in the wines. The 47 hectares of vineyard are on the slopes of the now extinct volcano Mt Canobolas, making it one of the highest vineyards in Australia. Philip Shaw was recently named a Five Star winery in the James Halliday Wine Guide 2018.

Easy but not too easy

I'm forever in search of wines that I can enjoy without food-matching, and this can be as tricky with reds as with whites. Hence a leaning towards the lighter-bodied. I can't challenge the above views of St. Veronica Malbec Reserva as a more substantial red but I can testify that the glass before the meal (or after) works just as well as the one with.

Drink it straight from the fridge and enjoy this as a great aperitif. Or match it with fish or chicken and it's complex ripe flavours come through - pow... We made chicken with a herb, cheese and lemon crust and the Chenin matched it perfectly. We loved this wine - how can it be so fruity and dry too? Looking forward to ordering more!
