Truly outstanding Châteauneuf wines are never cheap. Which is why the Vaudieu stands out as such terrific value. Every drop a delight, not a disappointment, this is Rhône red wine at its blockbuster best.

2015 was a very good year too, with the Syrah (29%) and Grenache (71%) ripening perfectly over a swelteringly hot summer. That makes for very ripe tannins too, giving this wine a black cherry character, a touch of liquorice and black pepper spice, and impressive power.

This is the kind of red wine you chose when nothing but the best in muscular, well-rounded, full-bodied red wine will do. A fine example, and remarkably good value for its pedigree.

There's probably not a wine drinker out there who hasn't heard of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. But beware of imitations. Being the Rhône's most famous red wine doesn't always equal the best. Luckily, in the hands of the Bréchet family, you have no need to worry

The Producer

The Château is a splendid 18th Century property, run by Laurent Bréchet. Over the past seven years, Laurent has transformed the estate through substantial investment and an obsession with quality. Situated northeast of the town, the vineyards surround those of Château Rayas, one of the best known Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers

The Winemaker

Philippe Cambie vinifies every vineyard parcel separately with a long, slow extraction of juice. Vinified in stainless steel tanks for 30 days, the wine is aged for 12 months, also in stainless steel. This is a conscious decision on Philippe's behalf, aimed at preserving the wonderful freshness of the fruit character.

The Region

The name Vaudieu originated from 'Vallée de Dieu' (Valley of God), a reference to the beauty of the area. Spread over 70 hectares (60 of red, 10 of white), the soils vary greatly, from sand to quartz, with clay-limestone outcrops. This diversity of soil and exposure adds complexity to the blend, with the fruit from the sandier soils lending aromatic elegance and that from the galets giving power and intensity.

Fromage Fort

A brilliant recipe to use up odds and ends of cheese - your final wine choice will depend slightly on which cheeses you use but plump for lots of sweet, ripe fruit flavours and you won't go far wrong. Try the Closerie de Vaudieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge fora bit of a treat.

Roast Lamb with Herb Butter

Roast Lamb works a treat with Grenache heavy Southern Rhone styles, with the balanced tannins and spiced flavours of the wine perfectly matching this simple, easy roast. We'd go for Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Potatoes with Chorizo

Spicy, rich stews need a medium-bodied red with bright fruit flavours. Try a Closerie de Vaudieu's Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
