Think of a German white wine, and Pinot Gris probably won't spring to mind. But on the evidence of this eye-opening wine from Villa Wolf, maybe it should. This is the kind of white wine which slips down effortlessly, and then you're surprised the bottle's nearly finished. Which makes it a top everyday drop.

No wishy-washy Pinot Grigio here (the same grape variety), instead you'll find bags of pear-peach character, not too ripe though, just enough to remain impressively fruity throughout.

At Villa Wolf organic practices are used in the vineyard (uncertified), and it's a wine that's suitable for both vegans and vegetarians. Perfect on its own; the locals are fond of it with asparagus too.

Gorgeously peachy from nose to finish, this vibrant, fruity Pinot Gris offers wide appeal along with a gentle price tag. Dry on the palate and refreshingly zesty, it’s an elegantly balanced sip. A touch of stony minerality lends complexity to the finish. Wine Enthusiast - 90 pts

The Producer

Ernst Loosen took over this German wine estate in 1996, having picked the Pfalz as the wine region where he'd make his dry wines. The name 'Villa Wolf' is used to label his excellent quality wines made from fruit grown outside his vineyard holdings.

The Winemaker

Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer have transformed the Villa Wolf estate into a true wine success story. Though still under the guidance of Ernst Loosen, they manage the entire winemaking process at Villa Wolf, from vine to cellar. They employ the philosophy that great wines are created on the vine, so they employ organic growing practices to foster a balanced environment in the vineyards.

The Region

Situated to the south-east of Frankfurt, the region produces white and red wines, contrary to the likes of the Mosel and the Rhine regions which are very much white wine country. With the region sheltered by the Haardt mountains to the west, the climate is very similar to that of its southerly neighbour Alsace, with very warm summers and very low rainfall.
