It's been one of our best-selling Italian red wines for some time now and having taken a sip, you'll see why.

Syrah (aka Shiraz) maybe not the first red grape variety that springs to mind when you think of Sicily, but the Mediterranean's largest island has the perfect climate for it. Taking perfectly ripened grapes, New Zealand winemaker Alana McGettigan gives them the kid-gloves treatment in the winery.

There's a really smooth, savoury nature to this red wine, with oodles of black fruit and berry flavours. Not too heavy, it's a Syrah that is incredibly versatile, from a summer barbecue to a winter roast, whilst a glass or two by itself hits the spot wonderfully.

Feedback from customers on the Vortice Syrah has been tremendous - so we've specially shipped some more. Grab yours whilst you can.

Sicilian gem! Really liked this smooth syrah from Sicily. It was packed full of blackberry fruit but had a hint of peppery-ness. Would go well with a spicy Italian pizza! Claire

The Producer

These wines are made by Alana McGettigan and consultant Matt Thomson at a private winery in the hills outside of Trapani in western Sicily. Alana manages to fit this into her northern Italian commitments as the Sicilian harvest is in first half of September.

The Winemaker

Alana and Matt select the fruit from the estate's vineyards and vinifies it in their modern winery, which is well equipped with a must chiller, stainless steel tanks and temperature control. As a result, the wines are fresh and lifted with a lovely soft texture.

The Region

The vineyards are located in the hills outside Trapani, Western Sicily in the Erice region, close to the town of Fulgatore. Most of the vineyards are on a gentle slope, with tilled terra rossa soil, at an altitude ranging between 200-400 metres.

Another great wine

Generous fruity flavours with a hint of spice. Very drinkable and one to re-order. Highly recommended.

Brilliant!

A full bodied wine that initially swamps the mouth with flavours of dark fruits, then smooth dark chocolate overtones and a hit of liquorice. An excellent wine, with or without food. I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent wine before, during and after eating a home-made gammon, mushroom and tomato omelette, served with chips and green salad. Highly recommended.
