Here's a white wine that epitomises what's so great about Germany when it comes to Riesling. The Pfalz wine region is perfect for ripening grapes (and figs, almonds and even lemons), giving a vibrant natural fruity-sweetness to the wine. Backed up with some lively grapefruit-lime zippiness, and you've got a top Riesling.

It's made by the team behind Villa Wolf, with winemakers Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer showing their skills with this fine German wine. One of Riesling's great qualities is the way it doesn't need any mucking about within the winery. No oak, no tinkering with.

Just pure, unadulterated German Riesling. This is one white wine you really owe it to yourself to try.

The Producer

Ernst Loosen took over this German wine estate in 1996, having picked the Pfalz as the wine region where he'd make his dry wines. The Villa Wolf is used to label his excellent quality wines made from fruit grown outside his vineyard holdings and the Walt Riesling is produced by the Villa Wolf team.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"From the winemaking team at the Villa Wolf operation in the Pfalz, an off-dry Riesling in the classic Kabinett style that shimmers with bright fruit and elegant acidity. Pure as the driven snow, the taut white peach and lemon aromatics translate straight to the palate, where that touch of residual sugar is seductively soft against the brilliance of the fruit. A charming Riesling, and a killer match when I matched it with some Thai fishcakes and a spicy chilli dipping sauce"

The Region

Situated to the south-east of Frankfurt, the region produces white and red wines, contrary to the likes of the Mosel and the Rhine regions which are very much white wine country. With the region sheltered by the Haardt mountains to the west, the climate is very similar to that of it's southerly neighbour Alsace, with very warm summers and very low rain

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white which doesn't overpower the meat - try aromatic whites like the Walt Riesling which will naturally complement seafood dishes.

Fig and Blue Cheese Tart

The ripe, salty tang of blue cheese contrast brilliantly with the high acidity and fruit forward characteristics of off-dry German Pinot Gris and Riesling. The Walt Riesling is a fine choice to match this recipe.
