Grenache enthusiasts Willunga 100 source their fruit from the McLaren Vale's oldest Grenache vineyards, producing wines with intense concentration and depth of flavour. This classic Grenache is richly aromatic, with notes of violet, herbs, strawberry and bramble fruit, mirrored on the palate with a generous weight of fruit backed up by a firm structure. Winner of a Gold Medal at the Winewise Small Vigneron Awards 2015.

The Producer

Willunga 100 takes its name from the 'Hundred', an administrative area of 100 sq miles formed in 1839, just three years after the settlement of South Australia, and now the source for most of the winery's fruit. The first vintage was in 2005, following the discovery of fifty year old Grenache vineyards in the McLaren Vale, which prompted the Willunga team to make this their main focus. The combination of low yields from very old vines all help to produce intense wines with great levels of fruit concentration.

The Winemaker

With an incredible eighty years winemaking experience between them, winemakers Mike Farmilo and Tim James know a thing or two about the production of top class Aussie reds. Both careers began at the famous Roseworthy College, after which they worked for some of the biggest brands in Australian winemaking, including for Mike, a stint as head red winemaker at Southcorp, producing the famous Penfolds Grange, and for Tim, a long stint at Hardy's and an illustrious career as a wine judge. Mike joined Willunga in 2013 as winemaker, with Tim as consultant since 2010.

The Region

The McLaren Vale is one of Australia's oldest wine producing regions, with vineyards first planted in the 1840s. It is situated due south of Adelaide, sheltered by a range of hills to the south, and in close proximity to the sea to the west. The climate is soft and warm, with low rainfall and gentle transition from season to season. This is classic red wine country, with dry, full bodied reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in particular faring well.
