Bone dry, yet loaded with ripe, seductive fruit, this Chenin Blanc was part (80%) barrel fermented in oak and aged on its lees in barrel for 10 months to give rich, complex flavours of pineapple, peach and honey with a nutty finish, not forgetting a crisp, racy acidity. The vineyard team chose to pick the fruit in three stages, resulting in a multitude of different flavours and styles.

Buy this if...you love rich, structured whites.

A new wave of Chenin Blanc, combining exotic ripe fruit and honeyed richness with a taut, crisp palate.

The Producer

Situated on the Stellenbosch Wine Route and owned and managed by the Johnson family, two prime farming locations supply the Zevenwacht winery: the home vineyards on Zevenwacht's 450 hectare maritime property, and the farm Zevenrivieren at the crest of the Helshoogte Pass. The name 'Zevenwacht' is derived from Dutch meaning 'Seven Expectations'.

Tom Cannavan Reviews

Don't just take our word for it; here's what wine writer Tom Cannavan has to say:

"Much of the Cape's Chenin Blanc was originally planted for the brandy industry, but now producers are discovering the potential for serious but fruit-filled wines made from the grape, in this case, barrel-fermentation adding a judicious touch of creamy richness to the pristine, fresh, but ripe fruit suggesting pineapple and ripe mango, but the zest of the acidity cleansing and sweeping through to give it terrific food-matching credentials too. Try with goat's cheese (fresh or grilled) instead of the ubiquitous Sauvignon Blanc."

The Region

The warm, sunny climate of Stellenbosch is grape-growing heaven on rich, dark soils, with cool breezes drifting in from the ocean to temper the heat of the day. The proximity to the ocean is evident, with great concentration of fruit and underlying freshness.

Fruity Pork

Succulent roast pork with a rich fruity sauce needs a wine with ripe, generous fruit and crisp, mineral acidity to balance out the sweetness of the sauce. We'd go for a Chenin Blanc with enough weight to take on the meat and fruit combination.

Smoked Haddock with Creamy Lentils

A delicious smoked haddock together with rich, creamy lentils needs a wine with plenty of fruit concentration and structure to stand up to the contrasting smoky, earthy and creamy notes. For weight and body head to ripe New World whites.

Bacon Wrapped Scallops

Match the delicate scallops and smoky bacon with a rich, structured white - the fruitiness of Zevenwacht's Chenin Blanc will contrast nicely with the salty flavours in the bacon.
