Aged in older oak barrels for 16 months, this 100% Merlot comes from two separate vineyard sites in Stellenbosch: the higher altitude giving juicy, crisp fruit and the lower altitude vines adding generous texture and depth of flavour. Classic Merlot flavours of dark plums and chocolate are layered with red fruit flavours of cherry and strawberry. Smooth, soft and very juicy, this is in tip-top shape now but will last well for up to 6 years.

Buy this if...you love a ripe, juicy Merlot.

Gorgeously ripe, fruity Merlot from a top Stellenbosch estate.

The Producer

Situated on the Stellenbosch Wine Route and owned and managed by the Johnson family, two prime farming locations supply the Zevenwacht winery: the home vineyards on Zevenwacht's 450 hectare maritime property, and the farm Zevenrivieren at the crest of the Helshoogte Pass. The name 'Zevenwacht' is derived from Dutch meaning 'Seven Expectations'.

The Winemaker

Cellarmaster Jacques Viljoen combines tradition with modern science and the principals of environmental care with passion and creativity to produce wines that are pure, natural and made to be enjoyed.

The Region

The warm, sunny climate of Stellenbosch is grape-growing heaven on rich, dark soils, with cool breezes drifting in from the ocean to temper the heat of the day. The proximity to the ocean is evident, with great concentration of fruit and underlying freshness.

Salami Pizza

The tomato and spicy meat on the pizza need a light-medium bodied red with sweet fruit flavours. Stick to ripe reds with soft tannins.

Pasta Puttanesca

This Italian classic can handle a big and fruity red or white – the acidity of the tomatoes and salty anchovy balance rich, juicy reds such as Merlot.

Cheesy Chilli Bacon Skewers

A great party food idea, theses more-ish snacks are packed with flavour and will cope well with an equally punchy, ripe red with spicy notes and soft tannins.
