From the vineyards of Cariñena this Macabeo white wine is fruity and floral with lively acidity. You might be more familiar with Macabeo as it's known in Rioja - Viura. It's refreshing and pale yellow in colour with glints of green. Picked early to retain freshness, you'll get white blossom, citrus zest and a stone fruit finish. A wonderful match to grilled prawns or fried whitebait. Classic Spanish dishes with a hint of paprika and spice will also work well.

Spain once more shows that it's giving us some of the best value wines around.

Light in alcohol - just 12.5% - fruity and very easy drinking, this Spanish white wine is versatile with food and fantastic as a refreshing glass by itself. At this brilliant everyday price, every fridge needs a bottle

The Producer

Founded in 1944 by 60 winegrowers from Cariñena region, the cooperative winery, then solely called Bodegas Gran Ducay specialized in the cava production. The Cava used to be made by craftsmen for the private consumption of the winery's 700 associates. Since these days the winery has expanded to producing still as well as sparkling wine. The Gran Ducay winery is still very much in production for sparkling wine but operations have been separated. Viña Zielo is produced by Bodega San Valero, the grapes are sourced from the heart of the Cariñena countryside, they produce a range of wines from native grapes.

Winemaking

The Macabeo grapes were selected from the quality Viña Zielo vineyards. The grapes were harvested early and transported to the winery for maceration and cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This early harvest and cool fermentation aims to enhance the bright aromatic notes of the grape and pale green and yellow hues. These are all flours and characteristics that the winemaker desires and wants to encourage in this versatile grape that is also used to produce Spain's infamous Cava and white Rioja.

The Region

In 1932, Cariñena obtained the first Designation of Origin in the Aragon region The region is placed in the middle valley of Ebro river that runs from the Cantabrian Mountains eastwards to the meet the Mediterranian sea between Barcelona and Valencia.
The soil, climate and altitude at Bodega San Valero lie between 400 and 800 m. These elements come together to turn this land into an excellent place for the winemaking and the microclimates in this area allow for many grapes to be grown.
The co-op's vineyards span 3500 hectares and are situated between the rivers Huerva and Jalón.

Good everyday white.

A pleasant wine that's good to have in the fridge in case an unexpected guest or two appears.

The delicate crab meat calls for a smooth, fruity, floral white or rosé which doesn't overpower the meat - try Southern French rosés or Spanish Macabeo with good weight of fruit.
