Buy Coteaux Bourguignons Wine

This is a very new addition to the roster of French wine regions, first appearing in 2011. The idea was to breathe life into the old Bourgogne Ordinaire (and Grand Ordinaire – that oddity where wine is both “grand” and “ordinary”).

It covers all of greater Burgundy, and Beaujolais too. This is a little controversial since it means Beaujolais producers can now legally put “bourguignon” on their labels, which could be construed as misleading consumers.

As for grape varieties, any of Burgundy’s authorised types may be used. So for white wines this is Aligoté, Chardonnay, Melon, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, and for red wines Gamay, Pinot Noir and César (this last one just in the Yonne).
