Lisboa

Just when you thought only New World regions could qualify for “up and coming” status, along comes Lisboa, which despite having a long winemaking history, has never really registered with consumers under its previous name of Estremadura. But that looks set to change, with a highly promising set of reds and whites that have proved to be a breath of fresh air into the industry of late.

Located to the north and west of the capital, it might come as little surprise that this is a region where the sea and the wind play a big part. The warm, sunny climate tempered by the Atlantic breezes produces concentrated, elegant wines with a rich, fruity character. Grapes tend to be blends of local Portuguese grapes but some growers are now working with international varieties with some stunning results. Look no further for the next big thing!
