Pouilly Fume Wine

One of the Loire’s most famous wines, and a seemingly everlasting restaurant wine list staple. This is Sauvignon Blanc territory. Along with nearby regions Menetou-Salon, Quincy, Reuilly, and, of course, Sancerre, the grape variety produces classic wines that have delighted diners around the world.

Limestone soils with some flint (silex) provide the basis for Sauvignon Blanc vines to produce wines with a “smoky” character, or even a “whiff of gunflint”. Whether you consider that fanciful or true, wines from Pouilly-Fumé are certainly distinctive, although it takes a lot of practice to separate them from Sancerre if tasted blind.
