Punta del Este Wine

Many inhabitants of Uruguay are descendants of Italian and Spanish immigrants, who have bought generations of wine making knowledge with them. Some vineyards are over 100 years old, run by fourth and fifth generation wine makers who initially started making wine for their own consumption. They have been joined in recent times by foreigners who saw Uruguay’s potential to produce fantastic wines mainly from the Tannat grape for reds and Sauvignon Blanc for whites. The region around the city of Punta del Este is known as Maldonado and its coastal breezes and cooler temperatures have attracted some of Uruguay’s best winemakers.
