Just off the tip of southern Italy’s toe, Sicily is a large island that produces high volumes of wine, in particular white wines made from Catarratto grapes. Red Nero d’Avola is particularly successful as well as international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The best vineyards are planted at high altitudes to mitigate the high temperatures. Marsala is a popular fortified wine made in Sicily and is commonly used in dessert recipes such as Tiramisu.
